The Bible contains a lot of strange-to-us ancient writings. The biblical creation account is one of them, written to ancient readers with an ancient perspective. In their world, origin stories were common, but the Bible’s creation story had some key differences.

Many ancient origin stories present the creation of the world as an accident—and humans as either a mistake or people made by the gods to exploit. But the Bible talks about how God carefully designed the world to flourish, and intentionally created humans as His partners in expanding the goodness of the world.

The point of this story isn’t to give an explanation of the creation of the world from a modern scientific perspective. Instead, it insistently points out that people aren’t a mistake. We matter to God, and we have a purpose.
