Called to Father With Purpose

I remember it like it was yesterday. The ultrasound tech was doing her thing, checking measurements for the doctor to review. Then came the question that changed everything:

“Do you want to know what you’re having?”

It felt like time stood still. Then she spoke the words that forever altered my life:
“You’re having a girl.”

A girl? I knew nothing about raising a girl! I grew up with a little brother—so how in the world did God think I was equipped to be a girl dad?

I left that appointment more nervous than when I walked in. In just a few months, I’d have a daughter in my arms, and I didn’t feel ready. Sure, I read a few books and did what I could to prepare, but when the day came, reality hit hard.

Because of an emergency C-section, I didn’t get to see her born. But the moment they wheeled her out of the operating room, everything shifted. She had a full head of hair, and in that instant something deep inside me—something God put there—came alive. I knew right then:
God handpicked me to be her dad.

Not my friends. Not my pastor. Not a neighbor. Me.

And the same is true for you. God, in His sovereignty, specifically chose you to father your child. No one else can fill that role but you.

Being a father isn’t random—it’s a divine calling. I’ll never forget holding her for the first time. She was swaddled like a little burrito, and as I whispered a prayer of thanks for this miracle, a sense of overwhelm came crashing in. But then, something beautiful happened: while doubts and insecurities raced in my mind, she rested peacefully on my chest. That moment didn’t erase my fears, but it reminded me of this truth—God equips those He calls.

As we start this journey together, let’s embrace this incredible calling. When the King of the universe entrusts us with one of His daughters, heaven rejoices when men step up and lead as He desires.

Remember this today: God could have chosen anyone on the planet—but He chose you. Hold your head high. Rebuke the lies of doubt. And rest in the truth that you are the man for this job.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How do you view your role as a father today?
  2. Why do you believe God chose you for this role?

I'm Just a Guy: Raising a Daughter(s)

It’s a girl!!! Now what? The “manual” for raising a daughter seems to change depending on who you ask. But instead of chasing advice from the world—which can lead you down some dangerous paths—lean into God’s Word. Here’s what we know to be true: God handpicked you to raise that little girl. So step up, trust Him, and do it His way. You’ve got this, Dad!
