THE SIN THAT LIVES IN US
You were set free from sin, not set free to sin. We cannot have a relationship with sin and God at the same time. It’s one or the other.
Many believe that we are born perfect and good until we sin, implying that the world is the problem and we are perfect until the world corrupts us. That is a lie. The world is a problem, but apart from Christ, so are we. We came into the world with a sin problem. And that sin problem just keeps on growing, until we find the God solution.
What sin are you carrying that’s weighing you down right now? Is it living for the approval of people? Is it obsession with money and status? Is it an addiction to alcohol? Addiction to pornography and masturbation? Jealousy and envy? Bitterness and unforgiveness? Living in constant fear?
For the longest time I thought my performance, perfect reputation, and good deeds would save me and give me the freedom I longed for. This metrics based system that I put on myself left me constantly striving, exhausted, and feeling like I never was enough. That’s because we weren’t meant to save ourselves, free ourselves, or sustain ourselves.
Sin lures you in. It promises you pleasure, happiness, and freedom. And at first, you may feel those things. But the longer you stay and the deeper you go in, it ends up costing you way more than you were willing to pay. Sin’s price is death. It is not to be toyed with or tolerated. You can’t make friends with sin or ignore sin and expect to escape its consequences. It may start off fun when you feel in control. But sin is stronger than you, just like the ocean. You can’t manage or control it. It manages and controls you.
Only the Son can set us free from the stronghold of sin. We cannot save ourselves, nor can we be saved by a fellow sinner. It takes someone perfect to save someone imperfect.
Jesus saw all of your sin and he still chose the cross. He said, “you are worth it. I’ll take your place.” He set us free from sin by becoming sin and paying the price none of us could… with his life. And He defeated sin by rising from the grave three days later.
Sin promises delight, but leads to death. Sin is not to be overlooked, downplayed, tolerated, or flirted with. Sin will cost us everything. Only by breaking free from sin can we find hope, happiness, and purpose.
