Introvert, You're Not the Only One

One of the most common phrases I hear when I connect with introverts is “I thought I was the only one.”

I thought I was the only one who sometimes needs a nap after spending time with people, even if I love them.

I thought I was the only one who wishes the world would turn down the volume, especially on social media.

I thought I was the only one who would pick a quiet walk or deep conversation over a party or other "fun” activities.

After engaging with thousands of introverts, I can say with certainty, “You’re not the only one.”

While we can perceive the world around us as extroverted, research shows that 50.7 percent of people are introverts.

God intentionally made half the world introverts. He’s strategically positioned us in every area of life—­business, nonprofit organizations, schools, hospitals, churches, neighborhoods, families.

It’s tempting to change who we are in order to fit into these places. But what our introvert hearts really long for isn’t conformity; it’s true connection. It’s the feeling of being known and loved as we are.

That can happen only when we have the courage to be who God made us. When we give ourselves permission to be who we are, we also make others feel less alone—­especially our fellow introverts.

“We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other” (Rom. 12:5 NLT).

You are not the only one when it comes to your struggles. But you are the only one when it comes to your gifts, purpose, and God’s plan for you.

You’re the only one who can offer what he’s placed within you, love people in your unique way, and display his image to the world exactly as you do.

Introvert, we need you to be you.

God, thank you for creating me as an introvert. Help me to use who you've made me to show others who you are. I offer you every part of who I am today. Amen.
