MASSIVE MIRACLE

The crossing of the Red Sea was a massive miracle. Exodus 12:37-38 (CEV) tells us, “There were about 600,00 of them not counting women and children. Many other people went with them as well and there were also a lot of sheep, goats and cattle.” Scholars believe the total number of people was close to 2.5 million men, women and children plus the animals.

A Quartermaster General in the Army did an evaluation to determine what would be needed to care for such a huge number of people. He determined there would have to be 3 million pounds of food and 11 million gallons of water every day. The camp would be the size of two-thirds of Rhode Island to pitch the tents and pen the animals.

And then the people of Israel were trapped between the Red Sea and the Egyptian Army. Exodus 14:21-22(CEV) tells us, “The Lord sent a strong east wind that blew all night until there was dry land where the water had been. The sea opened and the Israelites walked through on dry land with a wall of water on each side.”

The Quartermaster report said it would take 35 days to cross double file on a narrow path. But the Israelites crossed in one day. For everyone to walk across the Red Sea in one day, the path would have been at least three miles wide with people walking across 5,000 abreast.

The massiveness of this miracle is hard to fathom. Food and water needed every day for people who numbered the size of the city of Houston, Texas. Opening the Red Sea over 15,000 feet so everyone walked on dry land.

Understanding the logistics of this miracle should cause us to consider just how great God’s power really is. As we face illness, disease, financial shortfalls, relational problems or whatever else may challenge us, we can know that these are not problems too big for our God.

Our initial response may be one of wonder and amazement. But we must move past that to a place of active faith. God may not work in a way we want or expect, but he will act. He is at work and his purposes will be accomplished regardless of present circumstances.

He is never caught off guard and has a bigger plan than we can see. Our responsibility is to believe. To put our faith in an all-powerful God who does impossible things. The same God who parted the Red Sea is the same God who can do a miracle in your life.
