Racecar Drivers and the Bible

Kyffin Simpson is currently an IndyCar driver for Chip Ganassi Racing. After working his way through the Road to Indy, he is now paired with two of the most successful IndyCar drivers in current history, Scott Dixon and Alex Palou. He grew up in the Cayman Islands surrounded by a Christian family, which influenced his favorite verse, Romans 8:28.

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” Romans 8:28 NLT

Kyffin says that he has grown up with this verse, and it sticks inside of his head because “it’s my grandfather’s favorite verse, whom I look up to a lot for his love of God and devotion to him.” He said he has found that this has proved true in his life. “I get to have my dream job and live such an incredible life that there is so much to be thankful for.”

Romans 8:28 is one of the most encouraging promises God gives us. Whether we are living in a time of prosperity and joy or a time of difficulty, we can trust that God works everything out for our good as his children. This is in line with much of what Paul discusses throughout the rest of Romans. Whether we are in seasons of plenty, joy, hardship, or want, God uses them for his good purposes and our growth. In fact, earlier in Romans 8, Paul says, “Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal later” (8:18). It is clear that God uses whatever circumstances his children may be facing for his glory. Paul also says in Romans 5 that God uses our circumstances for our growth. “We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation” (5:3-4).

So, God uses all things in his children’s lives - joy, sorrow, hardship, suffering, success, and more - for his glory and our growth. He has a purpose for everything that takes place, and he is sovereign over everything. What does this mean for us? If we love God, we can trust him no matter what we are going through. When we are in the midst of blessing, we can thank him and trust that he is the one who worked everything out to get us to this point. When we are facing hardships, we can trust that he will bring good out of it as we continue to love him and rely on him. It is all about trusting him. Do you trust him with all things in your life?
