Praying Like Nehemiah in Difficult Timesಮಾದರಿ

Being Honest With God
Picture a time when you felt like you were up against severe opposition. Maybe you felt financial pressure during a period when you were scraping by, or there were relationships in your life that diminished or tore you down at every turn. Perhaps an unexpected tragedy or incident occurred, and it left you feeling like you were at rock bottom and being attacked on all sides.
Now ask yourself — what does it look like to approach the Lord with raw honesty in the midst of tough circumstances?
In Nehemiah 4, Nehemiah is not only dealing with the physical attacks of his enemies as they try to stop the rebuilding of the wall, but also emotional mocking and ridicule as they slandered the Lord and the work Nehemiah was called to do.
In this difficult season, Nehemiah turns to the Lord — and is brutally honest about his feelings and who he is up against. He asks the Lord to respond and take action against his enemies (Nehemiah 4:4-5). He seeks justice against wickedness, and is not afraid to come before the Lord, asking Him to see the wrongs done to him and to his people and inviting the Lord into that pain and frustration.
Prayers like Nehemiah’s are common throughout the book of Psalms. In Psalm 35, David prays for the Lord to fight on his behalf against his enemies, asking to be shielded from harm and for those who fight against him to be put to shame. Similarly, the prayer of Psalm 109 asks the Lord for repercussion against evil, asking for the wicked to be brought low.
It’s inevitable that we will face trials in our lives (John 16:33), and that the more we follow Christ, the more hostility we may encounter from the world (John 15:19). We will feel the effects of injustice and the oppression of a world broken by sin. However, like Nehemiah, we can turn to the Lord in the midst of trial. We can be honest with Him about the pain of suffering and the hardship of facing enemies, and we can invite Him into that space, calling for righteous justice and for God’s will to be known to all.
In your conversations with God, consider these questions and practical ideas as you pray like Nehemiah:
• What does being honest with God look like for you personally? Do you feel free to express anger, grief, or confusion to Him? Why or why not?
• Nehemiah and David prayed for justice. What would it look like to pray both for justice and for God’s presence in the midst of pain — rather than just for the situation to be "fixed?”
• Is there an area in your life right now where you feel attacked or torn down? How might you invite God into that specific situation with bold, honest prayer?
