Trapped on the Toilet Table? God Has Turned the Tables for You!

DAY 7 OF 8

The Come Dine With Me Table & the Wedding Feast Table

When it first came on TV, I used to love watching ‘Come Dine With Me.’ It’s been on the air for over twenty years now in the UK so the novelty has worn off! On it, five guests host a dinner party at each of their homes for five consecutive nights. The goal is to impress their fellow diners with delicious food, good vibes, and exciting entertainment. Some contestants go all out to cook elaborate meals and provide exciting after-dinner entertainment (magicians, singers, jugglers, belly dancers, and fire eaters have all featured!). They are eager to get top marks. Inevitably, guests' personalities clash and there are strops over starters, moans over mains, and digs over desserts. They criticise each other’s burnt offerings and bad entertainment. At the end of the week, they are asked to score each other out of ten, and the best dinner party host wins £1000.

This table is not reflective of God’s good table. The Come Dine with Me table is all about competition, judging, and aiming to impress. It’s not about hospitality and kindness, but about cooking good and looking good to grab the grand!

A biblical table that differs completely from this, is God’s table in Revelation 19, referred to as ‘the wedding supper of the lamb’. This is the table where a great feast happens in Heaven, and the beauty is that it’s an eternal feast. If you’ve ever enjoyed an all-you-can-eat buffet, you ain't seen nothing yet! Revelation 19 describes the time when Christ and the Church are united forever, the party gets started and continues into eternity (I like to escape parties by 9 pm, so God's got some work to do on me in this regard!).

If you know God personally, you have this great feast to look forward to. You have a permanent seat around a table of exquisite food, fine-flowing wine, joyful conversation, loving community, and absolute perfection. Eternal joy, feasting, laughter, mutuality, worship, and excitement are your future. And I'm assuming heaven's food is calorie-free - amen - bring on God's sticky toffee pudding!

There will not be a whiff of judging, point scoring, or trying to impress. We will all be completely in awe of our amazing God, delighted to be dining in his company forever. Our conversation will be God-honouring and joy-filled, and we will all be truly secure, acknowledging that what we have around our heavenly table is more than we had ever dreamt was possible.

Reflection

Spend time today imagining what the wedding supper of the lamb will be like. (On earth I don't share sticky toffee pudding, but I'll be perfect up there so may well have to!)

About this Plan

Trapped on the Toilet Table? God Has Turned the Tables for You!

Inspired by ‘the toilet table’ in a popular British sitcom, this plan is themed around different tables from both modern culture and the Bible. It examines what it’s like having your feet firmly planted under God’s table. God’s table is one where all are welcomed and all can find community, joy, forgiveness, and feasting. Each daily devotion is a tale of two tables - one which doesn’t represent God’s table well, and one which strongly does. If you don’t like the table you are currently sitting at, be encouraged that God is able to turn the tables!
