Your Spiritual Check-Up Using the 10 Commandments

DAY 2 OF 12

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.” (Exodus 20:2, ESV)

“You shall have no other gods before me.” (Exodus 20:3, ESV)

No other Gods – What am I worshipping?

In his book “Center Church," Pastor Tim Keller wrote “Worship is the act of ascribing ultimate value to something in a way that engages your entire being.”

I think another way to think about it is with this question: What do you love the most? When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, he didn’t hesitate in replying, to love God with everything. In Keller’s words, “your entire being.” What you love the most is what you worship.

Everybody worships something(s). Here are a few that go on the list: freedom, autonomy, health, sexual pleasure, marriage, children, success, wealth, isolation, acceptance, safety, security. There are a lot more additions to the list!

Questions To Consider

- What is on your Worship List?

- What do you need to turn from so you can turn to Father God as your ultimate value?

Actions to Take

- Say out loud and share with another person what most easily replaces God as your object of worship.

- Carry a piece of paper or make an electronic note and every time you notice yourself ascribing ultimate value to something or someone other than God, make a check mark. You can’t change what you don’t see. As you become aware of your patterns of worship, direct your worship to Jesus instead.

Prayer to Make

Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for revealing to me the true nature of my heart. Thank you for your presence, strength and forgiveness to restore me to right worship. I bow my knee and my heart to you, Father God, as my ultimate value today. Amen.

About this Plan

Your Spiritual Check-Up Using the 10 Commandments

The words of the Bible help keep us on the right path with God. In this plan you will use the Ten Commandments to do a self-check on your life to discern how well you are on the path and corrections you need to make. The goal isn’t legalistic perfection. The goal is a heart that loves God more fully and loves others. “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.” (1 John 5:3, ESV)
