Audacious Asking
When James and John, “the sons of thunder,” heard Jesus talk about His messiahship, they asked Him if they could sit at His side to rule with Him.
Even when Jesus asked them if they could partake of His bitter cup of suffering, they confidently said yes they could. Their imaginings of what it would be like to rule with Jesus clouded their thinking. They did not fully understand what the cost of discipleship and servanthood would require.
Nevertheless, the fact that they “asked” Jesus for his favor showed they were bold, hopeful, and expectant.
Do I sometimes ask Jesus for things I assume are good but don't really know the implications of what I'm asking for? Am I audacious enough to even dare to ask? Am I ready to trust his answers?
