In this passage we encounter the first expression of the most important Old Testament covenant. Genesis 12:1-3 is pivotal for the narrative of the entire Bible. With the Abrahamic Covenant, God begins to fulfil His promise of redemption (Genesis 3:15).

As you move forward with this plan, pay particular attention to the way this covenant is passed on to subsequent generations (Isaac and Jacob/Israel), and remember that a covenant is simply a way of describing God's relationship with people.

After reading the passage use these questions as the basis for your discussion.

3. What should we do / how can we apply this message? (Faith in Action)

Keep in mind that 'Old Covenant' refers to the Covenant with Israel through Moses (Mosaic Covenant), summarised in the 10 Commandments. We will read about this covenant in the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.
