Seeing the Water: Exposing Consumerism
We live in a culture where wanting more isn’t just normal—it’s expected. Ads, social media, and lifestyle influencers constantly preach a quiet sermon: *You are what you own. You’ll be happy when you get the next thing.* Like fish that don’t know what water is, we can be surrounded by consumerism and never notice how deeply it shapes our hearts.
Jesus warns us to “watch out” and “be on guard” against greed, because greed is sneaky. It doesn’t usually feel like evil; it feels like *normal*. It feels like, “I deserve this,” “I don’t have enough yet,” or “My life would finally be okay if I just had ____.”
But Jesus says life is *not* found in the abundance of possessions. That means you can have little and be rich, or have much and be empty. True life is found in Him—His presence, His love, His kingdom—not in the size of your house or the logo on your clothes.
The first step toward open-handed generosity is simply waking up: seeing how much our desires have been shaped by the world around us. Once we see the “water” we’ve been swimming in, we can start to choose a different way.
Reflection Questions:
1. Where do you feel the loudest pressure to “have more” (social media, friends, family, ads, etc.)?
2. Have you ever gotten something you really wanted and then quickly felt disappointed? What did that reveal?
3. What are 1-2 specific desires that might be shaped more by culture than by Christ?
Prayer:
Jesus, open my eyes to the “water” I’m swimming in. Show me where greed and consumerism have shaped my heart and my habits. Expose any lies I believe about money, stuff, and status. Teach me to believe that real life is found in You, not in what I own. Amen.

About this Plan

Most of us grow up swimming in consumerism without even realizing it. Like fish who don’t know what water is, we live in a culture where more is always better: more stuff, more upgrades, more square footage, more “just in case.” Advertising constantly disciples us to believe that happiness is just one purchase away.
