Basics of Bible Interpretation

DAY 2 OF 3

1. Christ is the Central Theme

“And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.” (Luke 24:27)

The entire Bible points to one Person, Jesus Christ. From Genesis to Revelation, He is the subject. You must read with the understanding that Christ is the message. Every interpretation must lead to a clearer view of Him and His finished work.

2. Know the Covenant Context

“For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (John 1:17)

The Bible contains two covenants: the Old and the New. Much confusion comes from mixing what God said to Israel under the law with what He now says to the Church under grace. Always ask:

Is this before or after the cross?

Is this law or grace?

Interpret Scripture in the light of the New Covenant and Christ’s finished work.

3. Read in Context

“Rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15)

Never take a verse out of context. Consider the verses before and after, the chapter, the book, the audience, the historical setting, and the purpose of the passage. Context guards against error and brings clarity.

4. Allow Scripture to Interpret Scripture

“The entirety of Your word is truth.” (Psalm 119:160)

The Bible agrees with itself. No verse stands alone. Compare Scripture with Scripture. Use clear verses to help interpret more complex ones. The Holy Spirit brings harmony, not contradiction.

5. Depend on the Holy Spirit

“When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth.” (John 16:13)

The Bible is spiritually understood. Intellectual ability alone is not enough. The same Spirit who authored the Word must unveil its meaning to you. Always approach Scripture prayerfully, asking the Holy Spirit to open your understanding.
