Learning How God Speaks

DAY 3 OF 3

It's easy to hear others talk confidently about hearing God's voice, but when it comes to our own lives it never seems that simple. Sometimes the hardest part about hearing God isn’t the silence but the uncertainty that fills our minds. Was that Him, or just my own thoughts? These feelings are something God understands, and He isn’t bothered by our questions. When we are humble enough to pause, test, and ask before moving forward, it helps us get closer to Him. When we look at Scripture, we see that Gideon asked for confirmation more than once, and God patiently met him there (Judges 6). In times when you are trying to discern God's voice, I would encourage you to write down what you sense He may be speaking. Then, weigh it against Scripture and seek counsel from mentors or others around you. These steps will allow His voice to grow clearer and will help you sort through the uncertainties of your own voice vs His.

However, along the way, we must also acknowledge that there may be things in our lives that block our hearing. When we live in a cycle of unrepentant sin, God's conviction gets quieter within us until we get to the point where we no longer hear Him. It's not that He stopped speaking, but rather, we stopped listening. Sin has a way of dulling our ears to God's voice, while unforgiveness hardens our hearts. Isaiah 59 tells us that sin separates us from God, but repentance restores our connection.

If you sense that in your life, I encourage you to remain humble and repent so the conviction and direction of God can become more apparent to you. Over time, you’ll realize His voice isn’t rare or distant. Instead, it’s steady and faithful like a Shepherd who guides His sheep step by step.

Remember, hearing God is not a skill to master, but a friendship you need to invest in. Trust that as you seek Him, you will find Him.

Today’s Challenge: Write down what you sense God might be speaking to you today, then bring it before Scripture and wise counsel. If needed, repent of anything that might be dulling your spiritual hearing.

Let’s Pray: Holy Spirit, remove every blockage that keeps me from hearing You clearly. Speak to me in a way that I will know it is You, and help me treasure and obey Your words.

About this Plan

Learning How God Speaks

Hearing God isn’t about complicated formulas or lofty experiences. It’s about a Father who longs to be close to His children and a Shepherd who knows how to guide His sheep. In this reading plan, you'll learn that it is less about striving and more about learning to recognize the ways He speaks. He isn’t far away. He’s present, faithful, and speaking to us more than we realize.
