Signal Fire - 1 Thessalonians

DAY 4 OF 29

Paul reminds the Thessalonians that when he and his friends first came to share the message of Jesus, it wasn’t easy. They had already faced trouble and mistreatment in another city, but they still came boldly, knowing the message was worth it. Paul says they didn’t come with tricks, flattery, or hidden agendas, but with honesty and courage. Their goal wasn’t to win people’s approval but to please God, the one who knows the heart. They weren’t trying to get something from the Thessalonians, but to give them the truth that leads to life. This was important because many teachers in those days traveled around looking to gain money or fame, but Paul made clear that his team’s motives were completely different.

The main thought here is that real faith and real leadership are built on sincerity. Paul wasn’t trying to sell something or impress anyone; he simply wanted to share the good news of Jesus in a way that honored God. That same challenge is for us today: Are we living for the approval of people, or for the approval of God? It’s easy to fall into the trap of doing things so others will notice, but Paul’s example calls us to live with integrity, letting God be the one who measures our motives and actions. True influence comes when we live with honesty, courage, and a heart that’s centered on Him.

Questions to think about:

  • When am I most tempted to live for the approval of people instead of God?
  • How can I tell if my motives are about giving to others or about gaining something for myself?
  • Where might God be inviting me to speak or act with courage, even if it’s not popular?
  • If people looked closely at my life, would they see sincerity and integrity at the center?

About this Plan

Signal Fire - 1 Thessalonians

"Signal Fire" is a devotional through 1 Thessalonians, showing how our lives are meant to shine as indicators of God’s love. Like a fire seen from a distance, faith that is lived out brings direction, warmth, and hope. Paul celebrates the Thessalonians because their faith, love, and endurance became a signal fire to others, spreading well beyond their city. This devotional invites us to tend the flame God has placed in us, so our everyday lives point people to Jesus and burn brightly with the hope of His return.
