Choosing Love Over Division

Politics. It’s a touchy subject…even when it isn't an election season. When it comes to the issue of politics, it’s easy to take issue with people and their viewpoints. Differences of opinion can lead to division between friends, family members, and even within the Church. We need to remember as believers that while difference is inevitable, division is a choice.

We each come from different backgrounds, upbringings, and perspectives. It's in our nature to see things differently. While it's impossible to see eye-to-eye on every topic, we don't have to let those differences tear us apart.

The real issue isn’t who we’re going to vote for or what political position we align with. Yes, those are important, but they’re not the most important. The real question is: Who are you going to be in the midst of all the chaos and division? Are you going to let heated debates turn you into someone you're not proud of? Or are you going to choose love over division? That's the decision that really counts. It's not just about checking a box on a ballot. It's about showing up as an ambassador for Christ and representing Him in every conversation.

We're blessed to live in a country where we can cast our votes freely or freely share ideas and perspectives. But don’t forget the even greater blessing of being part of something bigger than ourselves: the Body of Christ.

As we navigate the stormy waters of politics, let's keep our eyes fixed on the One who called us to love one another as He loved us.

Take some time to think about how you’ll respond to people in your life who may believe differently than you (politically or otherwise). What can you say to build common ground, find unity, and point them to Jesus? Ask God to give you wisdom and to speak through you.

Prayer:

God, thank you for your example of love. Help me to choose love over division and be the kind of person who represents you well. Help me to choose your kingdom and your ways over my own. In Jesus’ name, amen.
