Devotion
The Work of My Hands
You’ve heard people say, ‘It ain't what you do, it’s the way that you do it.’ Biblically speaking, it’s nearly the truth. Colossians 3:23 tells us that whatever we do, we should do it as though we’re serving the Lord. So actually, it’s not what we do or the way we do it that matters most – it’s who we do it for.
That’s not to say that our daily tasks don’t matter: writing emails, cleaning up after kids, or spreadsheet number crunching can each be a way to make a positive difference in the world. But when we commit our daily tasks to God, they become more than ends in themselves – they become an act of worship to the God who gave us the work to do in the first place.
For example, in my twenties, I worked as a waitress and always found Hebrews 13:2 encouraging:‘ Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it’. In even the humblest of settings, we can work with divine purpose. So be encouraged – regardless of your employment status, you can work as if working for the Lord.
Prayer
Lord, today give me eyes to see the value of my work. Help me not to look at my tasks and opportunities through a worldly lens, but through Your eyes. Please help me to understand that everything I do is for the King of Kings, whether I’m serving my boss, my children, my tutors, or my clients. In doing so, may my daily work be an offering of worship to You. Amen.
