Open Handed

DAY 9 OF 20

What’s the most prized possession you own? It doesn’t necessarily even have to be the most expensive! What’s the thing that’s most valuable to you? A family heirloom, an expensive piece of jewelry, a piece of art you care about, a sneaker you saved up to buy, the car you always wanted, a photo that captures a valuable moment. Whatever it is, you love it so much that you would never want to lose it. In fact, if someone asked you to give it away, you’d probably answer, “You’re going to have to pry it right out of my closed hands!” Go ahead and breathe a sigh of relief. Jesus’ words here aren’t asking you to give up the possessions you value. Rather, they’re simply asking you to consider where you find the most worth and value in your life. It’s not wrong to care about the things that matter or have value to you. It’s just important to make sure nothing stands in the way of your heart being fixed on eternity. That nothing—no wealth, no riches, no possessions, no status—is more valuable to you than Jesus Himself.

Talk with your small group about the ways in which this verse challenges you this week.

About this Plan

Open Handed

The truth is, no matter who you are, you have something to give in service to others. The problem? Those are often the things we tend to close our hands around the tightest. But what if that wasn’t the way life was meant to be lived? This devotional is going to talk about what an open-handed life really looks like, lived out—because generosity is about so much more than giving something away.
