Why I Believe

DAY 5 OF 11

No. 5 - The available historical evidence confirms that the Bible is true

Luke 1:1–4 (NIV) “…carefully investigated everything from the beginning…”

Remember that the Bible was written over 1,500 years by 35-40 authors, and its content is coherent; each of the 66 books supports and confirms the others.

Faith without a historical foundation or verifiable, factual information eventually dissipates into thin air. According to an article in Time magazine (December 18, 1995), up until that point, no archaeological or other discovery had proven any part of the Bible to be incorrect. The Bible doesn't provide evidence for all things. However, and this is important, there is nothing in the Bible that has been disproven by historical evidence.

Furthermore, there are no significant contradictions in the Bible. Yes, some passages may be difficult to understand, but none discredit the primary purpose and message of the Bible, which is to reveal who God is, the revelation of Jesus Christ, or the way to salvation. The claim by some that the Bible has “many” contradictions is reduced to only a few issues if one is interested in the facts.

No. 6 – The undeniable fact of the resurrection of Jesus Christ

Luke 1:1–4 (NIV)“…carefully investigated everything from the beginning…”

Many people find it challenging to believe in the resurrection. However, the truth is that on different occasions, many people saw Jesus after His resurrection. At one point, 500 people saw Him, and the disciples and their friends saw Him several times (1 Corinthians 15:1-8).

A significant number of lawyers, including non-Christian lawyers, have studied the resurrection and concluded that the available evidence would be sufficient to hold up in a court of law.

Chuck Colson, one of the top five politicians involved in the Watergate scandal, stated that he could easily prove that the resurrection must have happened. He recounts how, within days of the entire Watergate affair being leaked to the press, all five of them were telling different stories about what had happened. In the case of the resurrection, however, the eleven apostles and those who saw Him after His resurrection never denied it. Even experiencing the severest forms of persecution, not one of them ever recanted this truth. Chuck Colson said that if it were a lie, sooner or later someone would have spoken up and revealed that the whole thing was a fake.
