The Letter to the Philippiansნიმუში

“They’ve arrested Paul! He’s in prison!” The news must have spread like wildfire through the Christian community in Philippi. The church was deeply shaken. They shared a close history with Paul. He was the one who had brought them the message of Jesus and founded their church—the first in Europe. God Himself had called Paul to Europe in a dream (Acts 16:9). He didn’t stay long—only a few weeks before persecution forced him to leave the city.
The church's early years were marked by a stark contrast: On one hand, many came to faith, and the church grew. On the other hand, they faced persecution from the very beginning.
And now, the Romans had caught Paul again. The church gathers to decide what to do. Something must be done. They want to help Paul. What can they do? Paul needs support—both financial and personal.
They collect money and send Epaphroditus. He undertakes the long journey (most likely to Rome) to visit Paul in prison. He stays with Paul, ministers to him, provides for his needs—and then he falls gravely ill. For a long time, it was uncertain if he would survive.
But now, Epaphroditus has recovered. Paul sends him back to Philippi, carrying a letter with him: a letter of thanks to the church and an encouragement for them as they face their own pressures.
For Reflection:
All over the world, you have brothers and sisters in the faith with whom you are united in Jesus.
When have you experienced being a stranger somewhere, only to meet other Christians and feel instantly “at home”?
