01 – Meditations of a Layman on the Lord’s Prayer

We are glad to serve our brothers and sisters with three series of Bible reading plans. Each of them centers on the well-known “Lord’s Prayer.”

The three series are:

2. LORD'S PRAYER - The Lord's Requirements
3. LORD'S PRAYER - The Servant's Petitions

All of these studies are rooted in the book A Layman Looks at the Lord’s Prayer, written by South African author W. Phillip Keller. I purchased my copy in a secondhand bookstore during a Baptist seminary immersion course back in 1984… quite some time ago, isn’t it?

The Lord’s Prayer is without doubt the most widely known passage of the Bible worldwide. For more than two thousand years, it has been prayed by millions of people. It belongs to Jesus’ longest recorded sermon—known as the Sermon on the Mount—found in Matthew chapter 6.

Our proposal is to reflect together on this prayer, since—although well known—it is not always well understood. This text has been repeated by people of all backgrounds, from the simplest folk to scholars and theologians.

It is important to notice that, before teaching this prayer to His disciples, Jesus first explained how to speak with God. He emphasized the posture of the soul and heart of those who seek the Lord in prayer.

So, I invite you to reflect with me on these words: "Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen". (Matthew 6:9–13 - KJV)
