DAY 2 OF 42

The Benefits of God

Do you forget things more easily than you used to? Have you forgotten to wish a friend happy birthday, or forgotten where you left your keys?

For many people (regardless of age), forgetting things is a common occurrence. With an increasingly complex world, and a bombardment of information through your phone, the amount of information we manage often exceeds our capacities. And so, we forget some things.

In most cases, we recover just fine. You eventually find your keys, and your friend extends grace for the missed birthday greeting.

But forgetting some things is simply more tragic than others.

The author of today’s psalm was King David. Though he must have had many attendants to help him remember his schedule and other things on his to-do list, he recognised that his own soul had to be managed by himself. So, he speaks to his soul quite directly: “Praise the Lord, my soul.”

And what he tells his soul is to remember. He states it negatively (“forget not”), implying that our tendency is to actually forget things.

How is your memory? As you age, you may need to find some strategies to help you remember things better. But most importantly, how is your “spiritual memory”? Can you easily recall how God has answered prayers in your life? Can you remember when you had a strong sense of His presence?

Spend a few minutes looking back over the past month of your life. Do you remember when God was especially present for you? Can you recall the ways in which He revealed Himself to you?
