DAY 11 OF 42

Good, Good Father

U.S. statistics indicate that 1 in 4 children live without a father at home. Likely, the situation is not much better globally. For the men who do live at home, too many are prone to anger, yelling, or physical aggression. The sad reality is that many children grow up with an absent or angry father.

Fathers matter, and one’s view of their earthly father can affect their view of God the Father. Negative experiences as a child can cause difficulty in viewing God as a “Father God” who loves them personally. Those who grew up without a father may believe God has abandoned them. Those who endured abuse from their father can develop an overriding fear of God.

The biblical narrative is that we have a Father God who is a good, good Father. One who loves and cares for us beyond our comprehension. When we see fathers with their children, we can readily recognise the good ones. We notice how they attend to their children with care and patience, regardless of the children’s behaviour. We see their deep connection and desire to give their children the very best. God is that good, good Father.

How has your family background, especially in relation to your father, shaped your view of God? If you have a good father, what characteristics reflect your heavenly Father. If your experience has been more negative, are you able to separate this from your view of God the Father?

Don’t let your view of God be a parental hangover. Build up your conviction that God has poured good gifts into your life and will continue to give, again and again.
