Praise & Lament: Behind the Text

Many of the psalms have been linked to events in the life of King David. The laments come from the time in his life when he was running and hiding from King Saul.

David Runs from Saul

David grew up in Bethlehem, tending the family flocks on the edge of the Judean wilderness.

When David was running from Saul, he likely spent a good bit of time in the valleys of the Judean wilderness, such as this one (Wadi Qilt).

David hid in “the stronghold” (Hebrew “Metsuda”)—a term that may refer to Masada, this famous outcropping near the Dead Sea. (1 Sam 22:4; 24:22).

David hid in caves near the spring of En Gedi near the Dead Sea. He could have killed Saul but he refused to harm the LORD’s anointed (1 Sam 23:29–24:22).
