Liturgies for the Little Years

DAY 10 OF 10

Liturgies for the Family

I’ve looked for a while now for something we might use for a family worship time - a devotional or prayer we could read together. In my search, much of the material I’ve found (while it’s really good!) has not worked well for the ages of our kids (4 and 2). The content is often not concrete enough and therefore, not interesting to them at the age they’re at. However, I know that having time where we teach our kids about God and what it looks like to worship him is really important! I’m convicted by God’s calling on our lives as parents in Deuteronomy 6:6-9:

“Write these commandments that I’ve given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night. Tie them on your hands and foreheads as a reminder; inscribe them on the doorposts of your homes and on your city gates.”(The Message Translation)

With this calling in mind, alongside an understanding of our young kids’ ages, I took a shot at writing something for our family to use. In sharing it with you, I hope it might bless your family as well!

You’ll find two family liturgies, one for the day’s start and one for the end. The liturgies are designed for a parent to lead and the kids to join in with the lines in bold. I tried to keep the liturgies short, simple and semi-rhyming so that they might be memorized over time.

I pray these might be a useful tool for your family as you seek to disciple your kids and worship the Lord together!
