The Gospel of Johnნიმუში

Calling over Comfort.
In this passage, Mary does something bold and beautiful—she takes a jar of expensive perfume and pours it on Jesus’ feet, wiping them with her hair. Her act of worship is extravagant, costly, and deeply personal. In contrast, Judas criticizes her, not because he cares about the poor, but because he was greedy and self-serving.
Mary’s offering teaches us something powerful about worship: true devotion will often cost us something. It may cost our pride, comfort, energy, or even resources. But when we pour ourselves out for Jesus, it never goes unnoticed. In fact, Jesus defends her, saying her act was timely and meaningful—preparing Him for burial.
Have you ever found yourself choosing comfort over calling? I remember a moment when I had committed to visit a family and pray for someone who was sick. The night before, my flight was delayed and I barely slept. Every part of me wanted to cancel. But I pushed through—and I didn’t regret it. In that moment of weakness, God supplied strength I didn’t have on my own. His presence showed up in that visit, and I left more encouraged than I arrived.
We all have a natural tendency to choose what’s convenient or comfortable. But the will of God is rarely found in the path of least resistance. Like Mary, we are invited to bring our best to Jesus—not just when it’s easy, but when it’s hard. Worship is most powerful when it costs us something.
Whether it’s our time, our energy, or our finances—Jesus is worthy of it all. Mary didn’t hold back, and neither should we.
Respond to God’s Word:
What can you offer Jesus today that costs you something? Maybe it’s time spent in prayer when you’d rather sleep, money given to someone in need, or energy used to serve when you feel tired. Choose one thing and offer it to Him as an act of worship. Write down how it made you feel—and trust that God sees and honors your sacrifice.
