David, a Man After God’s Heartნიმუში

Asking for God’s guidance
After this David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up.” David said, “To which shall I go up?” And He said, “To Hebron.” (2 Samuel 2:1)
Today’s verse shows us an example of David’s dependence on the Lord. He did not just do whatever he deemed right, but he asked for God’s guidance and took the Lord’s directions seriously.
We read here that David received clear answers from God. We do not know whether a prophet told him, or he heard God’s voice audibly, or he perceived God’s will by other means. Nowadays, it is rare that people literally hear God’s voice when they ask for guidance. But there are certainly ways to discern His will.
First of all, the Bible gives us many clear instructions that apply to every believer and that we can base our personal decisions on. The Bible, being God’s own word, is like a general guideline. Moreover, God may sometimes show us the right way by closing doors or opening them, by speaking to us through a particular Bible verse we read, by the advice of God-fearing friends, or by giving His peace in our hearts if we follow Him.
If you are filled with the Holy Spirit and submit yourself to the Lord’s will, He will show you where to go. Are you seeking His guidance? What role does God’s will play when you need to make important decisions?
