Only Jesus Saves

The phrase “Jesus Saves” can be thrown around with very little context. You can find it on bumper stickers, t-shirts or the sides of buildings. Yet many would remark, “Saves? Saves us from what?”

The Bible makes it abundantly clear that humanity is implicated in this thing called sin. When our actions, speech and thoughts fall short of God’s perfect standard; that’s sin. It’s when we do what we ought not. And it’s when we do not do what we ought to. It’s a universal problem for people. It makes us spiritual dead and the object of God’s wrath.

But God’s love is so deep and his mercy so wide that, rather than abandoning us, he moved to rescue us. Jesus Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross pays for our sin and saves us. There’s nothing we could do to earn it, it’s a free gift of God’s grace. When we accept it by faith, we can rest and relish in the kindness of God towards us.
