Journeying to Easter - Part 1

DAY 8 OF 14

Gone forever!

As we move towards Easter, it’s important to remember God’s boundless mercy, described so well by the prophet Micah. When we turn to God in repentance, He does something extraordinary: He symbolically stomps on our sins and casts them to the bottom of the ocean. What does this really mean? To understand its magnitude, we must first understand the ‘depths of the sea’.

We know now, thanks to modern science, that the Mariana Trench is the deepest part of the world’s oceans, plunging nearly 36,000 feet below the surface. That’s more than 10 km deep! It’s a distant, inaccessible place where light is non-existent, and life is scarce. He does not merely hide our wrongs or push them aside. Instead, He casts them into an unreachable, untraceable abyss.

Just as you and I cannot retrieve something from the bottom of the Mariana Trench, God’s forgiveness removes our sins so far from us that they can never return. It is a powerful act of grace, where God submerges our past mistakes in a place of total obscurity, never to be seen or mentioned again.

Easter is the perfect time to contemplate the fact that our forgiven sins and the guilt and shame that can so often accompany them no longer have dominion over us. We are free to walk in His mercy, knowing that in the deep, dark places of the sea, our sins no longer exist. They are starved of all oxygen and gone forever, drowned in the boundless grace of God.

About this Plan

Journeying to Easter - Part 1

“In these next days and weeks leading up to Easter we’ll explore different scriptures. Each verse a thread in the tapestry of God’s great big redemption story – all culminating in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In this Easter season, let’s slow down and create a regular rhythm of remembrance together.” (Lent – Lucy Weil)
