I can't do it myself
‘No, I can do it myself!’ If you’ve ever been around young children, you’ll have heard these words declared with obstinance and passion. The focus is on their own abilities, wants and desires, and there’s often little wisdom or skill involved – for example they really can’t tie their own shoelaces yet (but they will make you stand and watch while they try!) or they’re physically just too short to reach the door handle! I know for children it’s something they have to learn as they grow and develop, but for adults, it should be something we’re up to the ‘practicing’ stage for – humility.
Proverbs 22:4 reminds us that humility is the fear of the Lord. Not fear in that we should be afraid of approaching Him or bringing our needs before Him, but in the sense that we must remember who He is. We serve the creator of heaven and earth and He deserves ALL the glory and honour. By acknowledging daily our complete dependence on Him (regardless of how much we may believe in our own abilities) we can ensure our life points back to Christ.
When we raise God up to His rightful place in our lives, and when we come to Him with a humble heart, others will see God reflected through us. If our posture of humility is different from the ‘I can do it myself’ attitude of the world then maybe, just maybe, they will want what we have!
