Promises: Strength and Shield
Ever feel like you don’t measure up? Ever feel like life’s assignment is way beyond your skill level? Convinced that you don’t have what it takes? You are not alone. The line of inadequacy stretches around the block, but you don’t have to stand stuck in the long line. Today’s passage tells us where to find real strength.
Psalm 28:7
The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.
In today’s psalm, David readily admits he doesn’t have what it takes. If God didn’t come to his aid, he concluded, “I will be like those who go down to the pit” (Psalm 28:1). When God heard David’s “cry for mercy,” David broke out in the confession, “The Lord is my strength.”
Certain adequacy doesn’t come from our winsome personalities, framed degrees hanging on our walls, or the experience we have in our fields of expertise. The long line of inadequacy is filled with qualified people. The ability to meet each challenge and opportunity of life must come from the Lord. He is our strength and power. He is our shield of protection. He is our source of trust. Help comes from him alone. Get out of the rut and acknowledge that your sufficiency is in the Lord.
Father, I cannot do what you are calling me to do while stuck in the long line of inadequacy. Give me the strength to move out and find my sufficiency in you alone. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
