Joseph the Ruler

Read: Genesis 40–42

Notice Joseph’s sensitivity to the feelings of his fellow prisoners. Notice also how he gives all the glory to God for being able to interpret dreams. And notice how easily the chief butler forgets about Joseph. What a realistic description of human nature we find in these ancient-inspired writings. How important that we learn from them what to do and what not to do.

God, in his mercy, reveals the future to Pharaoh so that wise steps can be taken to deal with those future problems. We may not know much of what the future holds, but certainly, God expects us to make wise plans to deal with the future, and he promises to give wisdom to those who ask him for it (Jas. 1:5).

What an outstanding person Joseph is. Wherever he goes, people are impressed by his character and ability. So he is put in charge of the program to store food for the coming time of need. Now Joseph’s boyhood dreams are fulfilled. His brothers bow before him. It is not surprising that they do not recognize him. But he must test them to see if they have changed after all these years. Change is difficult, but people can change. We must constantly pray that God will change us and that we will be patient with people as we pray that God will change them as well.

Prayer: Father, change us more and more into the likeness of your Son, for we know this is the goal of our salvation. In his name. Amen.
