Week 6: The Gift of Peace
Peace in Your Heart
Read: Colossians 3:12–17

Let the peace of Christ be in control in your heart (for you were in fact called as one body to this peace), and be thankful.
As we begin our final week of our Advent study and Christmas Day draws near, it feels fitting that we spend some time studying peace. We read in the account of Jesus’ birth in Luke that the shepherds were visited by an angel and great heavenly army singing, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among people with whom he is pleased!” (Luke 2:14). While shepherds and wise men brought gifts to Jesus, He brought us the gift of peace.
This peace isn’t a feeling but a daily choice to let Christ be in control of our hearts. Each morning we are called to put on a particular outfit: mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and love (Colossians 3:12–14). This is the outward showing of what God is doing in our hearts, and when we choose to add these characteristics and behaviors, we can be people who live in peace with others.
Once we have clothed ourselves in these virtues, we can stand firm in our faith when we “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and exhorting one another with all wisdom, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, all with grace in your hearts to God” (Colossians 3:16). Living in peace with other believers happens best when we work on it together. We need to hold one another accountable for our time in the Word, when we share what God is doing in our lives, when we encourage one another, and when we praise God together.
We are called to be ambassadors of Christ who show the world what peace on Earth can truly look like. How can you share this peace with others this week?
Prayer
God, thank You for the great gift of Jesus and the peace He made available for each of us. Help me choose each day to clothe myself in the virtues and behaviors that bring You glory and encourage others to live in peace. Amen.

About this Plan
The Greatest Gift Given is a six-week study designed to prepare our hearts to celebrate the greatest gift: Jesus Christ. It focuses on the character of God, our great Giver, and what it means to live a life of gratitude. As we move into the season of Advent, we’ll study some gifts God gave us in Jesus, each corresponding with the weeks of Advent: hope, faith, joy, and peace.
