To those who love someone with depression:
- Reiterate validation
Your loved one is a person to be loved, not a project to be fixed.

The Psalmist’s response is exactly the way our nervous system is created to respond when exposed to threat or emotional disturbance - we will either shut down and freeze or we will become completely agitated and go into fight or flight.
So often depression is a result of repressing our emotions or a lack of acknowledgement.
We need to begin to be curious and ask ourselves, “Why is this conversation making me so angry? Why does this experience make me so anxious? What am I truly afraid of?”
This process, this skill of noticing, helps our amygdala to become less reactive and helps us to start to get to the root.
