God’s Sovereign Choice: Raising a Deliverer for a Specific Need

Chosen for Such a Time as This—Could It Be You? In every generation, God reveals His sovereign plan by raising individuals uniquely prepared for the challenges of their time. These chosen deliverers often embody specific temperaments, gifts, and circumstances that align perfectly with God’s purposes. Their stories demonstrate how God uses individuals to fulfil His will, and they remind us that God’s calling is purposeful and intentional.

Moses: The Reluctant Leader

Moses’ journey began with divine intervention, as God preserved his life despite Pharaoh’s decree to kill Hebrew baby boys (Exodus 2:2-10). Raised in Pharaoh’s palace but deeply connected to his Hebrew heritage, Moses fled Egypt after an impulsive act of justice (Exodus 2:11-15). Years later, God called Moses through the burning bush, commissioning him to deliver Israel from bondage: “So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt” (Exodus 3:10).

Moses initially resisted, citing his inadequacies: “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent...I am slow of speech and tongue” (Exodus 4:10). Yet God assured him, “I will help you speak and will teach you what to say” (Exodus 4:12). His reluctance reflected humility, making him a fitting leader to showcase God’s strength through human weakness.

Through Moses, God performed miracles—the plagues, the parting of the Red Sea (Exodus 14:21-22), and manna in the wilderness (Exodus 16:31)—displaying His power to save. Moses’ obedience, despite his hesitations, teaches us that God equips those He calls.

Joshua: The Courageous Successor

Joshua’s temperament was distinctly different from Moses's. As a young man, Joshua served as Moses’ assistant and demonstrated unwavering faith in God’s promises. When ten of the twelve spies doubted Israel’s ability to conquer Canaan, Joshua and Caleb boldly declared: “The Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them” (Numbers 14:9).

After Moses’ death, God appointed Joshua as Israel’s leader, commanding him: “Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them” (Joshua 1:6). Joshua’s faith and courage enabled him to lead Israel through battles, such as the miraculous victory at Jericho (Joshua 6:20).

Joshua’s success was rooted in his obedience to God’s Word: “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night...Then you will be prosperous and successful” (Joshua 1:8). His story inspires readers to trust God completely, knowing He fulfils His promises.

What This Means for Us

The examples of Moses and Joshua demonstrate that God raises leaders uniquely suited for their times. Moses’ humility allowed God’s power to shine through his weakness, while Joshua’s courage showcased the strength of unwavering faith. Both were instruments of God’s justice and covenant fulfillment.

For readers, these stories offer hope: whether you relate to Moses’ doubts or Joshua’s boldness, God can use your temperament for His glory. As Paul wrote: “God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong” (1 Corinthians 1:27). Trust in His sovereign choice, and let your life reflect His purpose.
