“When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’ standing where it does not belong—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the housetop go down or enter the house to take anything out. Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! Pray that this will not take place in winter, because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now—and never to be equaled again. “If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time. “But in those days, following that distress, “ ‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’ “At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens. “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door. Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’ ”

« Vous verrez celui qu’on appelle “le Destructeur horrible” placé là où il ne doit pas être. Celui qui lit ces choses doit bien comprendre ! « À ce moment-là, ceux qui seront en Judée devront fuir dans les montagnes. Celui qui sera sur la terrasse ne devra pas descendre pour chercher quelque chose dans sa maison. Celui qui sera dans son champ ne devra pas retourner chez lui pour prendre son vêtement. Ces jours-là, quel malheur pour les femmes enceintes et pour celles qui allaitent leur bébé ! Priez Dieu pour que cela n’arrive pas pendant la mauvaise saison. En effet, ces jours-là, les gens souffriront beaucoup. Personne n’a jamais souffert comme cela, depuis le commencement du monde quand Dieu a tout créé, jusqu’à maintenant. Et personne ne souffrira plus jamais comme cela. Si le Seigneur Dieu n’avait pas décidé de diminuer le nombre de ces jours-là, personne ne pourrait sauver sa vie ! Mais il a décidé de diminuer le nombre de ces jours à cause des gens qu’il a choisis. Quand quelqu’un vous dira : “Regardez, le Messie est ici !” ou bien : « “Regardez, le Messie est là !”, ne le croyez pas. En effet, des faux messies et des faux prophètes vont venir. Ils feront des choses étonnantes et des miracles, pour tromper, si possible, même ceux que Dieu a choisis. Donc, vous, faites attention ! Je vous ai prévenus de tout ce qui va arriver. » « Ces jours-là, les gens souffriront beaucoup. Ensuite, le soleil ne brillera plus, la lune ne donnera plus sa lumière. Les étoiles tomberont du ciel et les puissances qui sont dans le ciel trembleront. Alors, on verra arriver le Fils de l’homme entouré de nuages, avec toute sa puissance et toute sa gloire. Il enverra les anges et il rassemblera ceux qu’il a choisis, des quatre coins de la terre, d’un bout du monde à l’autre. » « Comprenez bien la comparaison avec le figuier. Quand ses branches deviennent tendres, quand ses feuilles poussent, vous le savez, la nouvelle saison est bientôt là. De la même façon, quand vous verrez ces choses arriver, vous devez le savoir : le Fils de l’homme sera bientôt là, il est à votre porte. Je vous le dis, c’est la vérité : quand cela arrivera, les gens d’aujourd’hui ne seront pas tous morts. Le ciel et la terre disparaîtront, mais mes paroles ne disparaîtront jamais. » « Mais le jour et l’heure où ces choses arriveront, personne ne les connaît : ni les anges de Dieu ni le Fils. Le Père est seul à les connaître. Faites attention ! Ne dormez pas. En effet, vous ne savez pas quand ce moment viendra. Pensez, par exemple, à un homme qui part en voyage. Il quitte sa maison et la confie à ses serviteurs. Il donne à chacun un travail à faire et il commande au gardien de la porte de rester éveillé. Restez donc éveillés ! En effet, vous ne savez pas quand le maître de la maison va venir. Ce sera peut-être le soir, ou au milieu de la nuit, ou quand le coq chante, ou le matin. S’il revient tout à coup, il ne faut pas qu’il vous trouve endormis. Ce que je vous dis, je le dis à tous : restez éveillés ! »

Quand vous verrez l’abominable profanation établie dans le lieu où elle ne doit pas être – que celui qui lit comprenne ! – alors, que ceux qui sont en Judée s’enfuient dans les montagnes. Si quelqu’un est sur son toit en terrasse, qu’il ne rentre pas à l’intérieur de sa maison pour emporter quelque bien qui s’y trouve. Que celui qui sera dans les champs ne retourne pas chez lui pour aller chercher son manteau. Malheur, en ces jours-là, aux femmes enceintes et à celles qui allaitent ! Priez pour que cela n’arrive pas en hiver, car ce seront des jours de détresse comme on n’en a pas connus depuis que Dieu a créé le monde et comme jamais plus on n’en verra de semblables. Vraiment, si le Seigneur n’avait pas décidé de réduire le nombre de ces jours, personne n’en réchapperait ; mais, à cause de ceux qu’il a choisis, il abrégera ce temps. Si quelqu’un vous dit alors : « Voyez, le Messie est ici ! » ou : « Il est là ! » ne le croyez pas. De faux messies surgiront, ainsi que de faux prophètes. Ils produiront des signes miraculeux et des prodiges au point de tromper, si c’était possible, ceux que Dieu a choisis. Vous donc, faites attention, je vous ai prévenus ! Cependant, en ces jours-là, après ce temps de détresse, le soleil s’obscurcira, la lune perdra sa clarté, les étoiles tomberont du ciel ; les puissances célestes ╵ seront ébranlées . Alors on verra le Fils de l’homme venir sur les nuées avec beaucoup de puissance et de gloire. Il enverra ses anges rassembler ses élus des quatre coins du monde, d’un bout à l’autre de l’univers. Que l’exemple du figuier vous serve d’enseignement : quand ses rameaux deviennent tendres et que ses feuilles poussent, vous savez que l’été est proche. De même, quand vous verrez se produire ces événements, sachez que le Fils de l’homme est proche, comme aux portes de la ville. Vraiment, je vous assure que cette génération-ci ne passera pas jusqu’à ce que tout cela vienne à se réaliser. Le ciel et la terre passeront, mais mes paroles ne passeront jamais. Quant au jour ou à l’heure, personne ne sait quand cela se produira, ni les anges du ciel, ni même le Fils ; seul, le Père le sait. Soyez vigilants, restez sur vos gardes, puisque vous ne savez pas quand viendra le moment. Les choses se passeront comme lorsqu’un homme quitte sa maison pour un long voyage et en laisse la responsabilité à ses serviteurs, en confiant à chacun sa tâche. Il commande au portier de veiller. Tenez-vous donc vous aussi en éveil ! Car vous ne savez pas quand le maître de la maison doit revenir : sera-ce tard ? à minuit ? au chant du coq ? ou le matin ? Qu’il ne vous trouve pas en train de dormir s’il revient à l’improviste ! Ce que je dis là, je vous le dis à tous : Tenez-vous en éveil !
