When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.” Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?” The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment. When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him. When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.” When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. “What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?” Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.” He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.

Jésus descend de la montagne et des foules nombreuses le suivent. Un lépreux s’approche, il se met à genoux devant Jésus et lui dit : « Seigneur, si tu le veux, tu peux me guérir ! » Jésus tend la main, il touche le lépreux en disant : « Je le veux. Sois guéri ! » Aussitôt l’homme est guéri de sa lèpre. Jésus lui dit encore : « Attention, ne dis rien à personne ! Mais va te montrer au prêtre et offre le sacrifice que Moïse a commandé. Ainsi, tous auront la preuve que tu es guéri. » Jésus entre dans Capernaüm. Un officier romain s’approche de lui et lui demande son aide en disant : « Seigneur, mon serviteur est couché à la maison. Il est paralysé et il souffre terriblement. » Jésus lui dit : « Je vais aller le guérir. » Mais l’officier lui répond : « Seigneur, je ne suis pas digne que tu entres chez moi. Mais dis seulement un mot, et mon serviteur sera guéri. Moi, j’obéis à un chef et je commande à des soldats. Je dis à l’un d’eux : “Va !”, et il va. Je dis à un autre : “Viens !”, et il vient. Je dis à mon esclave : “Fais ceci”, et il le fait. » Quand Jésus entend cela, il admire l’officier, et il dit à ceux qui l’accompagnent : « Je vous le dis, c’est la vérité : dans le peuple d’Israël, je n’ai trouvé personne avec une foi aussi grande. Oui, je vous l’affirme, beaucoup de gens viendront de l’est et de l’ouest, et ils prendront le grand repas avec Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, dans le Royaume des cieux. Mais ceux qui devaient entrer dans le Royaume, on les jettera dehors dans la nuit ! Là, ils pleureront et ils grinceront des dents ! » Et Jésus dit à l’officier : « Retourne chez toi ! À cause de ta foi, ce que tu as demandé va arriver ! » Et au même moment, le serviteur est guéri. Jésus va dans la maison de Pierre. Il voit la belle-mère de Pierre : elle est couchée avec de la fièvre. Jésus lui touche la main, et la fièvre la quitte. La belle-mère de Pierre se lève et elle se met à servir Jésus. Le soir arrive. On amène à Jésus beaucoup de gens qui ont des esprits mauvais. Par sa parole, il chasse les esprits et il guérit tous les malades. Ainsi, Jésus réalise ce que le prophète Ésaïe a annoncé : « Il a pris ce qui nous fait souffrir et il a porté sur lui nos maladies. » Quand Jésus voit la foule autour de lui, il donne l’ordre d’aller de l’autre côté du lac. Alors un maître de la loi s’approche et lui dit : « Maître, je te suivrai partout où tu iras. » Jésus lui répond : « Les renards ont des trous pour s’abriter, et les oiseaux ont des nids. Mais le Fils de l’homme n’a pas d’endroit pour se reposer. » Quelqu’un d’autre, un disciple, dit à Jésus : « Seigneur, permets-moi d’aller d’abord enterrer mon père. » Jésus lui répond : « Suis-moi, et laisse les morts enterrer leurs morts ! » Jésus monte dans la barque et ses disciples l’accompagnent. Tout à coup, une grande tempête se met à souffler sur le lac. Les vagues vont bientôt recouvrir la barque, et Jésus dort. Les disciples s’approchent de lui, ils le réveillent en disant : « Seigneur, sauve-nous ! Nous allons mourir ! » Jésus leur dit : « Pourquoi est-ce que vous avez peur ? Vous n’avez pas beaucoup de foi ! » Alors il se lève, il menace le vent et l’eau, et tout devient très calme. Tous sont très étonnés et disent : « Qui donc est cet homme ? Même le vent et l’eau lui obéissent ! » Jésus arrive de l’autre côté du lac, dans le pays des Gadaréniens. Deux hommes sortent du cimetière et ils viennent à sa rencontre. Ils ont des esprits mauvais en eux. Ils sont très dangereux, et personne n’ose passer par ce chemin. Ils se mettent à crier : « Fils de Dieu, qu’est-ce que tu nous veux ? Est-ce que tu es venu ici pour nous punir avant le moment fixé par Dieu ? » Un peu plus loin, il y a un grand troupeau de cochons, en train de chercher leur nourriture. Les esprits mauvais supplient Jésus en disant : « Si tu veux nous chasser, envoie-nous dans ce troupeau de cochons ! » Jésus leur dit : « Allez-y ! » Les esprits mauvais sortent des deux hommes et ils entrent dans les cochons. Alors tout le troupeau se précipite du haut de la pente dans le lac, et les cochons se noient. Les gardiens du troupeau partent en courant. Ils vont à la ville. Ils racontent tout ce qui s’est passé et ce qui est arrivé aux deux hommes. Tous les habitants de la ville sortent pour aller à la rencontre de Jésus. Quand ils le voient, ils le supplient en disant : « Quitte notre pays ! »

Aussitôt, il fut purifié de sa lèpre. – Attention, lui dit Jésus, ne le dis à personne ; mais va te faire examiner par le prêtre et apporte l’offrande prescrite par Moïse. Cela leur servira de témoignage. Jésus entrait à Capernaüm, quand un officier romain l’aborda. Il le supplia : Seigneur, mon serviteur est couché chez moi, il est paralysé, il souffre terriblement. – Je vais chez toi, lui répondit Jésus, et je le guérirai. – Seigneur, dit alors l’officier, je ne remplis pas les conditions pour te recevoir dans ma maison, mais tu n’as qu’un mot à dire et mon serviteur sera guéri. Car, moi-même, je suis un officier subalterne, mais j’ai des soldats sous mes ordres, et quand je dis à l’un : « Va ! », il va. Quand je dis à un autre : « Viens ! », il vient. Quand je dis à mon esclave : « Fais ceci ! », il le fait. En entendant cela, Jésus fut rempli d’admiration et, s’adressant à ceux qui le suivaient, il dit : Vraiment, je vous l’assure : chez personne, en Israël, je n’ai trouvé une telle foi ! Je vous le déclare : beaucoup viendront de l’Orient et de l’Occident et prendront place à table auprès d’Abraham, d’Isaac et de Jacob, dans le royaume des cieux. Mais ceux qui devaient hériter du royaume, ceux-là seront jetés dans les ténèbres du dehors. Là, il y aura des pleurs et d’amers regrets. Puis Jésus dit à l’officier : Rentre chez toi et qu’il te soit fait selon ce que tu as cru. Et, à l’heure même, son serviteur fut guéri. Jésus se rendit alors à la maison de Pierre. Il trouva la belle-mère de celui-ci alitée, avec une forte fièvre. Il lui prit la main, et la fièvre la quitta. Alors elle se leva et se mit à le servir. Le soir venu, on lui amena beaucoup de gens qui étaient sous l’emprise de démons : par sa parole, il chassa ces esprits mauvais. Il guérit aussi tous les malades. Ainsi s’accomplissait cette parole du prophète Esaïe : Il s’est chargé de nos infirmités et il a porté nos maladies . Lorsque Jésus se vit entouré d’une foule nombreuse, il donna ordre à ses disciples de passer de l’autre côté du lac. Un spécialiste de la Loi s’approcha et lui dit : Maître, je te suivrai partout où tu iras. Jésus lui répondit : Les renards ont des tanières et les oiseaux du ciel des nids ; mais le Fils de l’homme n’a pas d’endroit où reposer sa tête. – Seigneur, lui dit un autre qui était de ses disciples, permets-moi d’aller d’abord enterrer mon père. Mais Jésus lui répondit : Suis-moi et laisse à ceux qui sont morts le soin d’enterrer leurs morts. Il monta dans un bateau et ses disciples le suivirent. Tout à coup, une grande tempête se leva sur le lac et les vagues passaient par-dessus le bateau. Pendant ce temps, Jésus dormait. Les disciples s’approchèrent de lui et le réveillèrent en criant : Seigneur, sauve-nous, nous sommes perdus ! – Pourquoi avez-vous si peur ? leur dit-il. Votre foi est bien petite ! Alors il se leva, parla sévèrement au vent et au lac, et il se fit un grand calme. Saisis d’étonnement, ceux qui étaient présents disaient : Quel est donc cet homme pour que même les vents et le lac lui obéissent ? Quand il fut arrivé de l’autre côté du lac, dans la région de Gadara, deux hommes qui étaient sous l’emprise de démons sortirent des tombeaux et vinrent à sa rencontre. Ils étaient si dangereux que personne n’osait plus passer par ce chemin. Et voici qu’ils se mirent à crier : Que nous veux-tu, Fils de Dieu ? Es-tu venu nous tourmenter avant le temps ? Or, il y avait, à quelque distance de là, un grand troupeau de porcs en train de paître. Les démons supplièrent Jésus : Si tu veux nous chasser, envoie-nous dans ce troupeau de porcs. – Allez ! leur dit-il. Les démons sortirent de ces deux hommes et entrèrent dans les porcs. Aussitôt, tout le troupeau s’élança du haut de la pente et se précipita dans le lac, et toutes les bêtes périrent noyées. Les gardiens du troupeau s’enfuirent, coururent à la ville et allèrent raconter tout ce qui s’était passé, en particulier ce qui était arrivé aux deux hommes qui étaient sous l’emprise de démons. Là-dessus, tous les habitants de la ville sortirent à la rencontre de Jésus et, quand ils le virent, le supplièrent de quitter leur territoire.
