“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?

« Personne ne peut servir deux maîtres. En effet, ou bien il détestera l’un et il aimera l’autre, ou bien il sera fidèle à l’un et il méprisera l’autre. Vous ne pouvez pas servir à la fois Dieu et l’argent ! » « C’est pourquoi je vous dis : ne vous faites pas de souci pour votre vie ni pour votre corps. Ne vous demandez pas : “Qu’est-ce que nous allons manger ? Avec quoi est-ce que nous allons nous habiller ?” Oui, votre vie est plus importante que la nourriture, et votre corps est plus important que les vêtements. Regardez les oiseaux. Ils ne sèment pas, ils ne moissonnent pas. Ils ne mettent pas de récoltes dans les greniers. Et votre Père qui est dans les cieux les nourrit ! Vous valez beaucoup plus que les oiseaux ! « Ce n’est pas en vous faisant du souci que vous pouvez ajouter un seul jour à votre vie ! Pourquoi alors vous faire du souci pour les vêtements ? Observez les fleurs des champs, regardez comment elles poussent. Elles ne filent pas et elles ne tissent pas. Pourtant, je vous le dis : même Salomon, avec toute sa richesse, n’a jamais eu de vêtements aussi beaux qu’une seule de ces fleurs. L’herbe est aujourd’hui dans les champs, et demain on la jettera au feu. Et pourtant, Dieu l’habille de vêtements magnifiques. Vous qui n’avez pas beaucoup de foi, vous pouvez être sûrs d’une chose : Dieu en fera au moins autant pour vous !

Nul ne peut être en même temps au service de deux maîtres, car ou bien il détestera l’un et aimera l’autre, ou bien il sera dévoué au premier et méprisera le second. Vous ne pouvez pas servir en même temps Dieu et l’Argent. C’est pourquoi je vous dis : ne vous inquiétez pas en vous demandant : « Qu’allons-nous manger ou boire ? Avec quoi allons-nous nous habiller ? » La vie ne vaut-elle pas bien plus que la nourriture ? Et le corps ne vaut-il pas bien plus que les vêtements ? Voyez ces oiseaux qui volent dans le ciel, ils ne sèment ni ne moissonnent, ils n’amassent pas de provisions dans des greniers, et votre Père céleste les nourrit. N’avez-vous pas bien plus de valeur qu’eux ? D’ailleurs, qui de vous peut, à force d’inquiétude, prolonger son existence, ne serait-ce que de quelques instants? Quant aux vêtements, pourquoi vous inquiéter à leur sujet ? Observez les lis sauvages ! Ils poussent sans se fatiguer à tisser des vêtements. Pourtant, je vous l’assure, le roi Salomon lui-même, dans toute sa gloire, n’a jamais été aussi bien vêtu que l’un d’eux ! Si Dieu habille ainsi cette petite plante des champs qui est là aujourd’hui et qui demain sera jetée au feu, à plus forte raison ne vous vêtira-t-il pas vous-mêmes ? Ah, votre foi est bien petite !
