“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘ Raca ,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell. “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift. “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

« Vous avez appris qu’on a dit à vos ancêtres : “Tu ne dois tuer personne. Celui qui tue quelqu’un, on l’amènera devant le juge.” Mais moi, je vous dis : Si quelqu’un se met en colère contre son frère ou sa sœur, on l’amènera devant le juge. Si quelqu’un dit à son frère ou à sa sœur : “Imbécile !”, on l’amènera devant le tribunal. Si quelqu’un insulte son frère ou sa sœur, cette personne mérite la terrible punition de Dieu. « Donc supposons ceci : tu viens présenter ton offrande à Dieu sur l’autel. À ce moment-là, tu te souviens que ton frère ou ta sœur a quelque chose contre toi. Alors, laisse ton offrande à cet endroit, devant l’autel. Et va d’abord faire la paix avec ton frère ou ta sœur. Ensuite, reviens et présente ton offrande à Dieu. « Quand tu es encore sur la route du tribunal avec ton adversaire, mets-toi vite d’accord avec lui. Sinon, il va te livrer au juge, le juge va te livrer à la police, et on va te jeter en prison. Je te le dis, c’est la vérité : tu ne sortiras pas de là si tu ne paies pas tout l’argent que tu dois ! » « Vous avez appris qu’on a dit à nos ancêtres : “Ne commets pas d’adultère.” Mais moi, je vous dis : celui qui regarde la femme d’un autre avec envie, celui-là, dans son cœur, a déjà couché avec cette femme. Si ton œil droit te fait tomber dans le péché, arrache-le, et jette-le loin de toi. Pour toi, il vaut mieux perdre une seule partie de ton corps. C’est mieux que de garder ton corps tout entier et d’être jeté dans le lieu de souffrance. Si ta main droite te fait tomber dans le péché, coupe-la, et jette-la loin de toi. Mais tu dois faire tout ce que tu as juré devant le Seigneur.” Mais moi, je vous dis : ne faites pas du tout de serments. Ne jurez pas par le ciel, parce que c’est là que Dieu habite. Ne jurez pas par la terre, parce que c’est l’endroit où il pose ses pieds. Ne jurez pas par Jérusalem, parce que c’est la ville du Grand Roi. Et ne jure pas par ta tête, parce que tu ne peux pas rendre un seul cheveu de ta tête blanc ou noir. Dites simplement “oui” ou “non”. Ce qu’on dit en plus vient de l’esprit du mal. »

Si donc, au moment de présenter ton offrande devant l’autel, tu te souviens que ton frère a quelque chose contre toi, laisse là ton offrande devant l’autel, et va d’abord te réconcilier avec ton frère ; puis tu reviendras présenter ton offrande. Si tu es en conflit avec quelqu’un, dépêche-toi de t’entendre avec ton adversaire pendant que tu es encore en chemin avec lui. Sinon, ton adversaire remettra l’affaire entre les mains du juge, qui fera appel aux huissiers de justice, et tu seras mis en prison. Et là, vraiment, je te l’assure : tu n’en sortiras pas avant d’avoir remboursé jusqu’au dernier centime. Vous avez appris qu’il a été dit : Tu ne commettras pas d’adultère . Eh bien, moi je vous dis : Si quelqu’un jette sur une femme un regard chargé de désir, il a déjà commis adultère avec elle dans son cœur. Par conséquent, si ton œil droit te fait tomber dans le péché, arrache-le et jette-le au loin, car il vaut mieux pour toi perdre un de tes organes que de voir ton corps entier précipité en enfer. Si ta main droite cause ta chute, coupe-la et jette-la au loin. Il vaut mieux pour toi perdre un de tes membres que de voir tout ton corps jeté en enfer. Il a aussi été dit : Si quelqu’un divorce d’avec sa femme, il doit le lui signifier par une déclaration écrite . Eh bien, moi, je vous dis : Celui qui divorce d’avec sa femme – sauf en cas d’immoralité sexuelle – l’expose à devenir adultère, et celui qui épouse une femme divorcée commet lui-même un adultère. Vous avez encore appris qu’il a été dit à nos ancêtres : Tu ne rompras pas ton serment ; ce que tu as promis par serment devant le Seigneur, tu l’accompliras . Eh bien, moi je vous dis de ne pas faire de serment du tout. Ne dites pas : « Je le jure par le ciel », car le ciel, c’est le trône de Dieu. Ou : « J’en prends la terre à témoin », car elle est l’escabeau où Dieu pose ses pieds. Ou : « Je le jure par Jérusalem ; », car elle est la ville de Dieu, le grand Roi. Ne dites pas davantage : « Je le jure sur ma tête », car tu ne peux pas rendre un seul de tes cheveux blanc ou noir. Dites simplement « oui » si c’est oui, « non » si c’est non. Tous les serments qu’on y ajoute viennent du diable.
