The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and for seven years he gave them into the hands of the Midianites. Because the power of Midian was so oppressive, the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves in mountain clefts, caves and strongholds. Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites, Amalekites and other eastern peoples invaded the country. They camped on the land and ruined the crops all the way to Gaza and did not spare a living thing for Israel, neither sheep nor cattle nor donkeys. They came up with their livestock and their tents like swarms of locusts. It was impossible to count them or their camels; they invaded the land to ravage it. Midian so impoverished the Israelites that they cried out to the LORD for help. When the Israelites cried out to the LORD because of Midian, he sent them a prophet, who said, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I brought you up out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. I rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians. And I delivered you from the hand of all your oppressors; I drove them out before you and gave you their land. I said to you, ‘I am the LORD your God; do not worship the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you live.’ But you have not listened to me.” The angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, “The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.” “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, ‘Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?’ But now the LORD has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.” The LORD turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?” “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.” The LORD answered, “I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites, leaving none alive.” Gideon replied, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, give me a sign that it is really you talking to me. Please do not go away until I come back and bring my offering and set it before you.” And the LORD said, “I will wait until you return.” Gideon went inside, prepared a young goat, and from an ephah of flour he made bread without yeast. Putting the meat in a basket and its broth in a pot, he brought them out and offered them to him under the oak. The angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened bread, place them on this rock, and pour out the broth.” And Gideon did so. Then the angel of the LORD touched the meat and the unleavened bread with the tip of the staff that was in his hand. Fire flared from the rock, consuming the meat and the bread. And the angel of the LORD disappeared. When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the LORD, he exclaimed, “Alas, Sovereign LORD! I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face!” But the LORD said to him, “Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.” So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD Is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. That same night the LORD said to him, “Take the second bull from your father’s herd, the one seven years old. Tear down your father’s altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah pole beside it. Then build a proper kind of altar to the LORD your God on the top of this height. Using the wood of the Asherah pole that you cut down, offer the second bull as a burnt offering.” So Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the LORD told him. But because he was afraid of his family and the townspeople, he did it at night rather than in the daytime. In the morning when the people of the town got up, there was Baal’s altar, demolished, with the Asherah pole beside it cut down and the second bull sacrificed on the newly built altar! They asked each other, “Who did this?” When they carefully investigated, they were told, “Gideon son of Joash did it.” The people of the town demanded of Joash, “Bring out your son. He must die, because he has broken down Baal’s altar and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.” But Joash replied to the hostile crowd around him, “Are you going to plead Baal’s cause? Are you trying to save him? Whoever fights for him shall be put to death by morning! If Baal really is a god, he can defend himself when someone breaks down his altar.” So because Gideon broke down Baal’s altar, they gave him the name Jerub-Baal that day, saying, “Let Baal contend with him.” Now all the Midianites, Amalekites and other eastern peoples joined forces and crossed over the Jordan and camped in the Valley of Jezreel. Then the Spirit of the LORD came on Gideon, and he blew a trumpet, summoning the Abiezrites to follow him. He sent messengers throughout Manasseh, calling them to arms, and also into Asher, Zebulun and Naphtali, so that they too went up to meet them.

Lespri Senyè a desann sou Jedeyon. Li soufle nan yon kòn belye mouton, li rele tout gason nan fanmi Abyezè a vin jwenn li. Apre sa, li voye mesaje nan tout peyi Manase a al rele moun yo pou yo vin jwenn li tou. Li voye mesaje nan peyi Asè, nan peyi Zabilon ak nan peyi Neftali. Tout moun sa yo moute vin jwenn li.

Les Israélites font ce qui est mal aux yeux du SEIGNEUR. Alors le SEIGNEUR les livre aux Madianites pendant sept ans. Ceux-ci font peser durement leur pouvoir sur Israël. À cause d’eux, les Israélites s’installent dans les couloirs des montagnes, dans les grottes et dans des endroits difficiles à atteindre. Chaque fois que les Israélites sèment dans leurs champs, les Madianites viennent les attaquer avec les Amalécites et des nomades de l’est . Ils campent sur leurs terres et ils détruisent les produits des champs jusque près de Gaza. Ils ne laissent rien à manger aux Israélites, ils ne leur laissent ni moutons, ni bœufs, ni ânes. En effet, ils viennent avec leurs troupeaux et leurs tentes. Ils arrivent en masse comme des sauterelles. Ils sont si nombreux, eux et leurs chameaux, qu’on ne peut pas les compter. Ils rentrent dans le pays pour le détruire. Les Madianites mettent les Israélites dans une grande misère, et ceux-ci crient vers le SEIGNEUR. Quand les Israélites appellent le SEIGNEUR pour les libérer des Madianites, le SEIGNEUR leur envoie un prophète. Cet homme leur dit de sa part : « Moi, le SEIGNEUR, Dieu d’Israël, je vous ai fait sortir d’Égypte, le pays où vous étiez esclaves. Je vous ai libérés des Égyptiens et de tous ceux qui vous maltraitaient. J’ai chassé vos ennemis devant vous et je vous ai donné leur pays. Je vous ai dit : “Je suis le SEIGNEUR votre Dieu. Vous qui habitez le pays des Amorites, ne servez pas leurs dieux.” Mais vous ne m’avez pas écouté. » L’ange du SEIGNEUR vient au village d’Ofra. Il s’assoit sous l’arbre sacré qui appartient à Yoach, du clan d’Abiézer. Gédéon, le fils de Yoach, est en train de battre le blé là où d’habitude on écrase le raisin. Ainsi les Madianites ne peuvent pas le voir. L’ange du SEIGNEUR se montre à Gédéon et lui dit : « Le SEIGNEUR est avec toi, combattant courageux ! » Gédéon répond : « Pardon, mon seigneur ! Si le SEIGNEUR est avec nous, pourquoi est-ce que nous sommes si malheureux ? Nos ancêtres nous ont raconté les actions extraordinaires que le SEIGNEUR a faites au moment de la sortie d’Égypte. Où sont donc ces actions ? Maintenant, le SEIGNEUR nous a abandonnés, il nous a livrés aux Madianites. » Le SEIGNEUR se tourne vers Gédéon et lui dit : « Avec la force que tu as, va délivrer Israël des Madianites ! Oui, c’est moi qui t’envoie. » Gédéon répond : « Seigneur, pardon ! Comment est-ce que je peux délivrer Israël ? Mon clan est le plus faible de la tribu de Manassé. Et moi, je suis le plus jeune de ma famille. » Le SEIGNEUR lui répond : « Je serai avec toi, et tu battras les Madianites comme un seul homme. » Gédéon dit au SEIGNEUR : « Si tu es bon pour moi, donne-moi un signe que c’est bien toi qui me parles. Ne t’en va pas avant mon retour. J’ai une offrande pour toi et je veux te l’apporter. » Le SEIGNEUR répond : « Je vais rester jusqu’à ton retour. » Alors Gédéon va préparer un cabri. Il prend 30 kilos de farine et il fait cuire des pains sans levain. Il met la viande dans un panier et le jus dans un récipient. Puis il apporte tout cela sous l’arbre sacré et il le présente à l’ange de Dieu. L’ange lui dit : « Prends la viande et les pains. Mets-les sur ce rocher et verse le jus dessus. » Gédéon obéit. Alors l’ange du SEIGNEUR touche la viande et les pains avec le bâton qu’il tient à la main. Un feu sort du rocher, il brûle la viande et les pains. Puis l’ange disparaît. Gédéon comprend que c’était l’ange du SEIGNEUR. Il dit : « Malheur à moi, Seigneur DIEU ! J’ai vraiment vu ton ange face à face ! » Mais le SEIGNEUR lui dit : « Que la paix soit avec toi ! N’aie pas peur, tu ne mourras pas. » À cet endroit, Gédéon bâtit un autel pour le SEIGNEUR. Il l’appelle « Le SEIGNEUR donne la paix ». Cet autel se trouve encore aujourd’hui à Ofra, le village du clan d’Abiézer. Cette nuit-là, le SEIGNEUR dit à Gédéon : « Prends le taureau de ton père, celui qui est né le deuxième et qui a sept ans. Après cela, tu détruiras l’autel où ton père adore le dieu Baal, et tu couperas le poteau sacré planté à côté. Ensuite, en haut de la colline, construis un autel bien équipé pour le SEIGNEUR ton Dieu. Emmène le taureau et offre-le en sacrifice complet. Pour le feu, prends le bois du poteau sacré que tu couperas. » Gédéon choisit dix de ses serviteurs pour faire ce que le SEIGNEUR lui a commandé. Mais il a peur d’agir en plein jour à cause de sa famille et des habitants du village. Alors il le fait pendant la nuit. Tôt le matin, quand les gens du village se réveillent, ils voient l’autel de Baal détruit. Le poteau sacré qui était à côté de lui a été coupé. Le taureau né le deuxième a été offert en sacrifice complet sur l’autel construit pendant la nuit. Ils se demandent entre eux : « Qui a fait cela ? » Ils se renseignent, font des recherches et ils apprennent que c’est Gédéon, fils de Yoach. Les villageois disent à Yoach : « Amène-nous ton fils, nous allons le faire mourir. En effet, il a détruit l’autel de Baal et il a coupé le poteau sacré planté à côté de lui. » Yoach dit à tous ceux qui étaient près de lui : « Est-ce que c’est vous qui devez défendre Baal ? Est-ce que c’est vous qui devez l’aider ? Celui qui prend la défense de Baal, il faut le faire mourir avant demain matin ! Si Baal est Dieu, il n’a qu’à se défendre lui-même, car c’est son autel qui a été détruit ! » À partir de ce jour-là, on appelle Gédéon Yeroubaal. Cela veut dire « Que Baal se défende ! ». On l’appelle de ce nom parce que Yoach a dit : « Baal n’a qu’à se défendre lui-même. En effet c’est son autel que Gédéon a détruit. » Les Madianites, les Amalécites et les nomades de l’est se rassemblent. Ils traversent le fleuve Jourdain et ils campent dans la plaine d’Izréel. L’esprit du SEIGNEUR saisit Gédéon, qui sonne de la trompette. Alors les hommes du clan d’Abiézer se mettent à le suivre. Gédéon envoie des messagers dans tout le territoire de Manassé. Les gens de cette tribu le suivent aussi. Il envoie encore des messagers dans les tribus d’Asser, de Zabulon et de Neftali, et leurs hommes viennent avec eux.

Lorsque les Israélites implorèrent l’Eternel à cause des Madianites, il leur envoya un prophète qui leur dit : Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël : « C’est moi qui vous ai fait sortir d’Egypte, de ce pays où vous étiez réduits à l’esclavage. Mais vous ne m’avez pas écouté. » L’ange de l’Eternel vint s’asseoir sous le chêne qui se trouvait à Ophra dans la propriété de Joas, un homme de la famille d’Abiézer. Gédéon, un fils de Joas, était en train de battre le blé dans le pressoir à raisin pour le cacher des Madianites. L’ange de l’Eternel lui apparut et dit : L’Eternel est avec toi, guerrier valeureux ! Gédéon lui répondit : De grâce, mon seigneur, si l’Eternel est avec nous, pourquoi tant de malheurs s’abattent-ils sur nous ? Où sont donc tous ces prodiges que nos pères nous ont racontés en nous disant que l’Eternel nous a fait sortir d’Egypte ? En réalité, l’Eternel nous a abandonnés et nous a livrés au pouvoir des Madianites. Alors l’Eternel se tourna vers lui et dit : Va avec cette force que tu as, et délivre Israël des Madianites. N’est-ce pas moi qui t’envoie ? Mais Gédéon répliqua : De grâce, mon Seigneur ! Avec quoi pourrais-je délivrer Israël ? Ma famille est peu importante dans la tribu de Manassé, et moi je suis le plus jeune des fils de mon père. L’Eternel lui répondit : Je serai avec toi, c’est pourquoi tu battras les Madianites tous ensemble. Gédéon lui dit : Eh bien, si réellement tu m’accordes ta faveur, prouve-moi par un signe que c’est bien toi qui me parles. Ne t’éloigne pas d’ici, je te prie, avant que je sois revenu vers toi avec une offrande que je te présenterai. – J’attendrai ton retour, lui dit-il. Gédéon rentra chez lui, apprêta un jeune chevreau et prépara des pains sans levain avec trente kilos de farine. Il mit la viande dans une corbeille et le jus dans un pot, puis il apporta le tout à l’ange de Dieu qui se tenait sous le chêne et le lui offrit. L’ange de Dieu lui dit : Prends la viande et les pains sans levain et dépose-les sur ce rocher, puis verse le jus par-dessus. Gédéon obéit. L’ange de l’Eternel avança le bout du bâton qu’il tenait en main et en toucha la viande et les pains sans levain. Une flamme jaillit du rocher et consuma la viande et les pains sans levain. Puis l’ange de l’Eternel disparut à ses yeux. A ce moment, Gédéon reconnut que c’était l’ange de l’Eternel et il s’écria : Malheur à moi, Seigneur Eternel ! Car j’ai vu l’ange de l’Eternel face à face. Mais l’Eternel lui dit : Rassure-toi, n’aie pas peur, tu ne mourras pas. Gédéon construisit à cet endroit un autel à l’Eternel et il l’appela « L’Eternel assure la paix ». Cet autel existe encore aujourd’hui à Ophra, un village du groupe familial d’Abiézer. La nuit suivante, l’Eternel dit à Gédéon : Prends le jeune taureau de ton père, le second, celui de sept ans. Démolis l’autel de Baal qui est à ton père et abats le poteau sacré voué à la déesse Ashéra qui est dressé à côté. Puis tu bâtiras un autel bien aménagé à l’Eternel ton Dieu au sommet de cette colline. Tu prendras le second taureau et tu l’offriras en holocauste, en utilisant comme combustible le bois du poteau sacré que tu auras abattu. Gédéon prit dix hommes parmi ses serviteurs et fit ce que l’Eternel lui avait demandé, mais comme il n’osait pas agir en plein jour par crainte de sa famille et des habitants du village, il opéra de nuit. Le lendemain matin, les gens du village découvrirent que l’autel de Baal avait été démoli, que le poteau sacré était abattu et qu’un taureau avait été offert en holocauste sur l’autel qui venait d’être construit. Ils se demandèrent les uns aux autres : Qui a fait cela ? Alors qu’ils cherchaient à se renseigner, on leur dit que c’était Gédéon, le fils de Joas, qui avait fait cela. Alors ils dirent à Joas : Fais sortir ton fils et il mourra, car il a démoli l’autel de Baal et abattu le poteau sacré qui se trouvait à côté. Mais Joas répondit à tous ceux qui se tenaient autour de lui : Est-ce à vous de défendre la cause de Baal ? Est-ce à vous de lui venir en aide ? Celui qui prendra parti pour Baal sera mis à mort avant demain matin. Si Baal est dieu, qu’il se défende lui-même, puisqu’on a démoli son autel. A partir de ce jour, on surnomma Gédéon Yeroubbaal (Que Baal se défende) parce qu’on avait dit : Que Baal se défende contre lui puisqu’il a démoli son autel ! Les Madianites, les Amalécites et les nomades de l’Orient rassemblèrent leurs troupes, traversèrent le Jourdain et installèrent leur camp dans la vallée de Jizréel. L’Esprit de l’Eternel s’empara de Gédéon qui se mit à sonner du cor. Alors les hommes de la famille d’Abiézer se rassemblèrent pour le suivre. Gédéon envoya des messagers dans tout le territoire de Manassé. Là aussi, les hommes se rassemblèrent pour marcher avec lui. Il envoya de même des messagers dans les tribus d’Aser, de Zabulon et de Nephtali, et tous vinrent le rejoindre.
