Des chefs de famille reviennent de Babylonie à Jérusalem avec moi, Esdras, au moment où Artaxerxès est roi. Voici leurs noms d’après les listes de leurs ancêtres : Guerchon, du clan de Pinhas, Daniel, du clan d’Itamar, Hattouch, du clan de David, un des fils de Chekania, Zakarie, du clan de Paroch, et avec lui 150 hommes de sa famille, Éliohénaï, fils de Zéraya, du clan de Pahath-Moab, et avec lui 200 hommes, Chekania, fils de Yaziel, du clan de Zattou, et avec lui 300 hommes, Ébed, fils de Yonatan, du clan d’Adin, et avec lui 50 hommes, Yechaya, fils d’Atalia, du clan d’Élam, et avec lui 70 hommes, Zébadia, fils de Mikaël, du clan de Chefatia, et avec lui 80 hommes, Obadia, fils de Yéhiel, du clan de Yoab, et avec lui 218 hommes, Chemolith, fils de Yossifia, du clan de Bani, et avec lui 160 hommes, Zakarie, fils de Bébaï, du clan de Bébaï, et avec lui 28 hommes, Yohanan, fils de Haccatan, du clan d’Azgad, et avec lui 110 hommes, Éliféleth, Yéiel et Chemaya, les trois plus jeunes membres du clan d’Adonicam, et avec eux 60 hommes, Outaï et Zakour, du clan de Bigvaï, et avec eux 70 hommes. Je rassemble tous ces hommes près du canal qui passe par Ahava, et nous campons là pendant trois jours. Je constate qu’il y a parmi eux des membres du peuple et des prêtres, mais aucun lévite. Alors je fais appeler les chefs Éliézer, Ariel, Chemaya, Elnatan, Yarib, Elnatan, Natan, Zakarie, Mechoullam, et les deux enseignants de la loi, Yoyarib et Elnatan. Je leur commande d’aller chez Iddo, le chef qui habite Kassifia. Je leur précise ce qu’il faut dire à Iddo et à ses frères, les serviteurs du lieu saint, qui sont à Kassifia. Ainsi, ils pourront nous ramener des hommes pour le service du temple de notre Dieu. La bonté de Dieu nous protège, alors ils nous ramènent Chérébia, un homme intelligent du clan de Mali et de la famille de Lévi, fils de Jacob. Il vient avec ses fils et ses frères, 18 hommes en tout. Ils ramènent aussi Hachabia, et avec lui Yechaya, du clan de Merari, avec ses frères et leurs fils, 20 hommes en tout. Ils ramènent enfin 220 hommes, spécialement désignés parmi les serviteurs du lieu saint. Autrefois, David et ses chefs ont donné des employés semblables aux lévites pour qu’ils soient à leur service.

These are the family heads and those registered with them who came up with me from Babylon during the reign of King Artaxerxes: of the descendants of Phinehas, Gershom; of the descendants of Ithamar, Daniel; of the descendants of David, Hattush of the descendants of Shekaniah; of the descendants of Parosh, Zechariah, and with him were registered 150 men; of the descendants of Pahath-Moab, Eliehoenai son of Zerahiah, and with him 200 men; of the descendants of Zattu, Shekaniah son of Jahaziel, and with him 300 men; of the descendants of Adin, Ebed son of Jonathan, and with him 50 men; of the descendants of Elam, Jeshaiah son of Athaliah, and with him 70 men; of the descendants of Shephatiah, Zebadiah son of Michael, and with him 80 men; of the descendants of Joab, Obadiah son of Jehiel, and with him 218 men; of the descendants of Bani, Shelomith son of Josiphiah, and with him 160 men; of the descendants of Bebai, Zechariah son of Bebai, and with him 28 men; of the descendants of Azgad, Johanan son of Hakkatan, and with him 110 men; of the descendants of Adonikam, the last ones, whose names were Eliphelet, Jeuel and Shemaiah, and with them 60 men; of the descendants of Bigvai, Uthai and Zakkur, and with them 70 men. I assembled them at the canal that flows toward Ahava, and we camped there three days. When I checked among the people and the priests, I found no Levites there. So I summoned Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah and Meshullam, who were leaders, and Joiarib and Elnathan, who were men of learning, and I ordered them to go to Iddo, the leader in Kasiphia. I told them what to say to Iddo and his fellow Levites, the temple servants in Kasiphia, so that they might bring attendants to us for the house of our God. Because the gracious hand of our God was on us, they brought us Sherebiah, a capable man, from the descendants of Mahli son of Levi, the son of Israel, and Sherebiah’s sons and brothers, 18 in all; and Hashabiah, together with Jeshaiah from the descendants of Merari, and his brothers and nephews, 20 in all. They also brought 220 of the temple servants—a body that David and the officials had established to assist the Levites. All were registered by name.

Je les rassemblai près de la rivière qui coule en direction d’Ahava et nous y avons campé pendant trois jours. Je passai le peuple et les prêtres en revue, et je constatai qu’il n’y avait parmi eux aucun lévite. Alors je convoquai les chefs Eliézer, Ariel, Shemaya, Elnathan, Yarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zacharie et Meshoullam, ainsi que les deux savants Yoyarib et Elnathan. Je leur demandai de se rendre chez Iddo, le chef de la localité de Kasiphia, et je leur indiquai ce qu’ils devaient lui dire, à lui et à ses collaborateurs, les desservants du Temple qui se trouvaient à Kasiphia, pour nous envoyer des assistants pour le temple de notre Dieu. Et comme notre Dieu était avec nous et nous témoignait sa bonté, ils nous amenèrent Shérébia, un homme avisé d’entre les descendants de Mahli, descendant de Lévi, lui-même fils d’Israël, accompagné de dix-huit hommes de sa parenté, dont ses fils, ainsi que Hashabia et Esaïe, descendants de Merari, avec vingt hommes de leur parenté dont leurs fils. Ils ramenèrent également 220 desservants du Temple, descendants de ceux que David et ses ministres avaient nommés pour assister les lévites. Tous avaient été nommément désignés.
