Le jour suivant, certains Juifs se réunissent en secret. Ils jurent devant Dieu : « Nous ne mangerons rien et nous ne boirons rien avant de tuer Paul ! » Ceux qui ont juré cela sont plus de 40. Ils vont voir les chefs des prêtres et les anciens et ils leur disent : « Voici ce que nous avons juré devant Dieu : nous ne prendrons aucune nourriture avant de tuer Paul. Maintenant donc, les autres membres du Tribunal doivent nous accompagner chez le commandant romain, et vous lui demanderez de faire venir Paul devant vous. Vous direz que vous voulez étudier son affaire de façon plus exacte. De notre côté, nous sommes prêts à le tuer avant qu’il arrive ici. » Mais un neveu de Paul, le fils de sa sœur, entend parler de ce piège. Il va à la caserne, il entre et prévient Paul. Alors Paul appelle un des officiers et lui dit : « Conduis ce jeune homme chez le commandant : il a quelque chose à lui annoncer. » L’officier emmène le jeune homme, il le conduit chez le commandant et dit : « Le prisonnier Paul m’a appelé, il m’a demandé de t’amener ce jeune homme. Il a quelque chose à t’annoncer. » Le commandant prend le jeune homme par la main, il l’emmène à l’écart et lui demande : « Qu’est-ce que tu as à me dire ? » Le jeune homme répond : « Certains Juifs sont d’accord pour te demander d’emmener Paul demain devant leur Tribunal. Ils diront qu’ils veulent étudier son affaire de façon plus exacte, mais ne les crois pas. En effet, plus de 40 hommes vont tendre un piège à Paul. Ils ont juré devant Dieu de ne rien manger et de ne rien boire avant de le tuer. Maintenant ils sont prêts, ils n’attendent plus que ta réponse. » Alors le commandant dit au jeune homme : « Ne raconte à personne ce que tu viens de me dire. » Puis il le laisse partir. Le commandant appelle deux de ses officiers, il leur dit : « Rassemblez 200 soldats, 70 cavaliers et 200 hommes armés. Ils doivent être prêts à partir pour Césarée à neuf heures du soir. Préparez aussi des chevaux pour conduire Paul en toute sécurité devant le gouverneur Félix. » Ensuite, le commandant écrit une lettre. La voici : « Claudius Lysias envoie ses salutations à son Excellence le gouverneur Félix. Les Juifs ont pris cet homme que je t’envoie et ils allaient le tuer. Alors je suis arrivé avec mes soldats et je l’ai délivré. En effet, j’ai appris qu’il était citoyen romain. J’ai voulu savoir pourquoi certains Juifs l’accusaient, donc, je l’ai amené devant leur Tribunal. J’ai vu qu’ils discutaient avec Paul au sujet de leur loi, voilà pourquoi ils l’accusaient. Mais il n’y a aucune raison pour le faire mourir ou pour le mettre en prison. On m’a prévenu que ces gens voulaient lui tendre un piège. C’est pourquoi je t’ai envoyé cet homme tout de suite. J’ai demandé à ceux qui l’accusent de porter plainte contre lui devant toi. » Les soldats font ce que le commandant leur a ordonné. Ils emmènent Paul et, pendant la nuit, ils le conduisent jusqu’à Antipatris. Le jour suivant, les soldats retournent à la caserne et ils laissent les cavaliers continuer la route. Les cavaliers arrivent à Césarée, ils donnent la lettre au gouverneur et lui amènent Paul. Le gouverneur lit la lettre et demande à Paul : « De quelle région es-tu ? » Paul répond : « De Cilicie. » Le gouverneur lui dit : « Je t’interrogerai quand ceux qui t’accusent seront là. » Et il commande de garder Paul dans le palais d’Hérode le Grand.

The next morning some Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul. More than forty men were involved in this plot. They went to the chief priests and the elders and said, “We have taken a solemn oath not to eat anything until we have killed Paul. Now then, you and the Sanhedrin petition the commander to bring him before you on the pretext of wanting more accurate information about his case. We are ready to kill him before he gets here.” But when the son of Paul’s sister heard of this plot, he went into the barracks and told Paul. Then Paul called one of the centurions and said, “Take this young man to the commander; he has something to tell him.” So he took him to the commander. The centurion said, “Paul, the prisoner, sent for me and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has something to tell you.” The commander took the young man by the hand, drew him aside and asked, “What is it you want to tell me?” He said: “Some Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul before the Sanhedrin tomorrow on the pretext of wanting more accurate information about him. Don’t give in to them, because more than forty of them are waiting in ambush for him. They have taken an oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him. They are ready now, waiting for your consent to their request.” The commander dismissed the young man with this warning: “Don’t tell anyone that you have reported this to me.” Then he called two of his centurions and ordered them, “Get ready a detachment of two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen to go to Caesarea at nine tonight. Provide horses for Paul so that he may be taken safely to Governor Felix.” He wrote a letter as follows: Claudius Lysias, To His Excellency, Governor Felix: Greetings. This man was seized by the Jews and they were about to kill him, but I came with my troops and rescued him, for I had learned that he is a Roman citizen. I wanted to know why they were accusing him, so I brought him to their Sanhedrin. I found that the accusation had to do with questions about their law, but there was no charge against him that deserved death or imprisonment. When I was informed of a plot to be carried out against the man, I sent him to you at once. I also ordered his accusers to present to you their case against him. So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul with them during the night and brought him as far as Antipatris. The next day they let the cavalry go on with him, while they returned to the barracks. When the cavalry arrived in Caesarea, they delivered the letter to the governor and handed Paul over to him. The governor read the letter and asked what province he was from. Learning that he was from Cilicia, he said, “I will hear your case when your accusers get here.” Then he ordered that Paul be kept under guard in Herod’s palace.

Ils allèrent trouver les chefs des prêtres et les responsables du peuple et leur déclarèrent : Nous nous sommes engagés par un serment solennel à ne rien manger ni boire tant que nous n’aurons pas tué Paul. A vous d’agir maintenant avec l’appui du Grand-Conseil : intervenez auprès du commandant et proposez-lui de faire comparaître Paul devant vous sous prétexte que vous voulez instruire son cas de plus près. De notre côté, nous avons pris nos dispositions pour le supprimer avant qu’il arrive ici. Mais le fils de la sœur de Paul entendit parler du guet-apens. Il se rendit à la citadelle, y entra, et prévint Paul de ce qui se tramait. Alors Paul fit appeler un officier de service et lui dit : Conduis ce jeune homme auprès du commandant, je t’en prie, il a quelque chose à lui dire. L’officier l’emmena donc avec lui et l’introduisit auprès du commandant en disant : Le détenu Paul m’a fait appeler et m’a demandé de t’amener ce jeune homme qui a quelque chose à te dire. Le commandant, prenant le jeune homme par la main, se retira avec lui à l’écart et lui demanda : Qu’as-tu à me dire ? Alors le neveu de Paul raconta : Les Juifs ont convenu de te demander de leur amener Paul, demain, au Grand-Conseil. Ils disent qu’ils veulent examiner son cas de plus près. Mais surtout, ne t’y laisse pas prendre. Ils sont à plus de quarante qui préparent un guet-apens contre lui. Ils ont juré de ne rien manger ni boire avant de l’avoir tué. Tout est prêt. Ils n’attendent plus que ton accord. Le commandant laissa repartir le jeune homme. Mais il lui fit d’abord cette recommandation : Surtout ne va dire à personne que tu m’as prévenu de cette affaire. Aussitôt après, il appela deux de ses officiers et leur commanda : Rassemblez deux cents légionnaires et tenez-vous prêts à partir pour Césarée. Prenez avec vous soixante-dix cavaliers et deux cents soldats armés de lances. Départ à neuf heures ce soir. Préparez aussi des montures pour Paul et amenez-le sain et sauf au gouverneur Félix. Il rédigea en même temps le billet suivant pour le gouverneur : Claudius Lysias adresse ses salutations à Son Excellence le gouverneur Félix. Les Juifs s’étaient saisis de l’homme que je t’envoie et ils allaient le tuer quand je suis intervenu avec la troupe. Je l’ai arraché de leurs mains, car je venais d’apprendre qu’il était citoyen romain. Comme je voulais savoir de quoi ils l’accusaient, je l’ai fait comparaître devant leur Grand-Conseil. J’ai constaté que leurs accusations portaient sur des questions relatives à leur loi, mais que l’on ne pouvait lui imputer aucune faute entraînant la peine de mort ou même la prison. Mais je viens d’être informé d’un projet d’attentat contre lui. C’est pourquoi je te l’envoie sans attendre, et je fais savoir à ses accusateurs que c’est devant toi qu’ils auront à porter plainte contre lui. Conformément aux ordres reçus, les soldats emmenèrent Paul et le conduisirent pendant la nuit jusqu’à Antipatris. Le lendemain, les légionnaires laissèrent les cavaliers poursuivre seuls le chemin avec lui et ils revinrent à la citadelle. A leur arrivée à Césarée, les cavaliers remirent la lettre au gouverneur et lui présentèrent Paul. Le gouverneur lut la lettre et demanda de quelle province il était originaire. Apprenant qu’il était né en Cilicie, il lui dit : Je t’entendrai quand tes accusateurs seront arrivés. Puis il donna ordre de le faire mettre en résidence surveillée dans le palais d’Hérode.
