Après cela, Paul décide de traverser la Macédoine et l’Akaïe pour aller à Jérusalem. Il dit : « Ensuite, j’irai aussi à Rome, il le faut. » Il envoie en Macédoine deux de ses aides, Timothée et Éraste, mais lui-même reste encore un peu dans la province d’Asie. À ce moment-là, il y a une grande agitation à cause du chemin du Seigneur. En effet, un bijoutier, appelé Démétrius, fabrique des petits temples en argent de la déesse Artémis . Pour ce travail, il donne aux artisans un bon salaire. Alors Démétrius réunit les artisans et tous ceux qui vivent de ce métier. Il leur dit : « Mes amis, vous le savez, c’est grâce à ce travail que nous vivons bien. Mais ce Paul dit que les dieux fabriqués par les hommes ne sont pas des dieux. Et il a réussi à en persuader beaucoup de gens, non seulement ici, mais dans presque toute la province d’Asie. Vous avez entendu parler de tout cela et vous le constatez. Cela risque de faire du tort à notre métier. De plus, le temple de la grande déesse Artémis va peut-être perdre de son importance. On ne dira plus : “Artémis est une grande déesse !” Pourtant, tout le monde l’adore dans la province d’Asie et sur la terre entière. » Quand les gens entendent cela, ils se mettent en colère et ils crient : « C’est une grande déesse, l’Artémis des Éphésiens ! » Alors l’agitation se répand dans toute la ville, et tout le monde se précipite au théâtre public. On entraîne aussi Gaïus et Aristarque, deux Macédoniens qui accompagnent Paul dans son voyage. Paul veut se présenter devant la foule, mais les disciples l’empêchent de le faire. Quelques fonctionnaires importants de la province d’Asie sont des amis de Paul. Ils lui envoient des gens pour lui donner ce même conseil : « Ne te montre pas au théâtre ! » Pendant ce temps, dans la foule, il y a beaucoup de bruit et d’agitation. Les uns crient une chose, les autres en crient une autre, et la plupart des gens ne savent même pas pourquoi ils sont rassemblés. Les Juifs poussent au premier rang un certain Alexandre, et quelques-uns lui expliquent ce qui se passe. Alors Alexandre lève la main, il veut parler à la foule. Mais on apprend qu’il est juif, alors, pendant à peu près deux heures, tout le monde crie d’une seule voix : « C’est une grande déesse, l’Artémis des Éphésiens ! » Enfin, le secrétaire de la ville réussit à calmer la foule et il dit : « Éphésiens, tout le monde le sait, la ville d’Éphèse est chargée de protéger le temple de la grande déesse Artémis ainsi que sa statue tombée du ciel. Personne ne peut dire le contraire. Donc, vous devez vous calmer et réfléchir avant d’agir. Vous avez amené ces hommes ici, pourtant ils n’ont rien fait de mal contre le temple et ils n’ont pas insulté notre déesse. Démétrius et ses artisans veulent peut-être accuser quelqu’un. Eh bien, il existe des juges et il y a des jours où le tribunal est ouvert. Allez donc devant les juges ! Si vous avez quelque chose d’autre à demander, on verra cela à l’assemblée qui applique la loi. En effet, nous risquons d’être accusés de révolte à cause de ce qui s’est passé aujourd’hui. Nous ne pouvons donner aucune raison pour expliquer ce rassemblement. » Quand le secrétaire a fini de parler, il renvoie les gens chez eux.

After all this had happened, Paul decided to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia. “After I have been there,” he said, “I must visit Rome also.” He sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he stayed in the province of Asia a little longer. About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way. A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought in a lot of business for the craftsmen there. He called them together, along with the workers in related trades, and said: “You know, my friends, that we receive a good income from this business. And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all. There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited; and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty.” When they heard this, they were furious and began shouting: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” Soon the whole city was in an uproar. The people seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul’s traveling companions from Macedonia, and all of them rushed into the theater together. Paul wanted to appear before the crowd, but the disciples would not let him. Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theater. The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there. The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander to the front, and they shouted instructions to him. He motioned for silence in order to make a defense before the people. But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” The city clerk quieted the crowd and said: “Fellow Ephesians, doesn’t all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven? Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to calm down and not do anything rash. You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples nor blasphemed our goddess. If, then, Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a grievance against anybody, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. They can press charges. If there is anything further you want to bring up, it must be settled in a legal assembly. As it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of what happened today. In that case we would not be able to account for this commotion, since there is no reason for it.” After he had said this, he dismissed the assembly.
