Dans l’Église d’Antioche de Syrie, il y a des prophètes et des hommes qui enseignent. Ce sont Barnabas, Siméon appelé le Noir, Lucius de Cyrène, Manaën, qui a été élevé avec Hérode Antipas, et enfin Saul. Un jour, ils sont réunis pour prier le Seigneur et ils jeûnent. Alors l’Esprit Saint leur dit : « Mettez à part Barnabas et Saul pour faire le travail que je vais leur demander. » Ils continuent à jeûner et à prier. Ensuite, ils posent les mains sur la tête de Barnabas et de Saul et ils les laissent partir. Donc, l’Esprit Saint envoie Barnabas et Saul. Ils vont à Séleucie et, de là, ils prennent le bateau pour l’île de Chypre. Ils arrivent à Salamine et ils annoncent la parole de Dieu dans les maisons de prière des Juifs. Jean-Marc est avec eux pour les aider. Ils traversent toute l’île et arrivent à Paphos. Là, ils rencontrent un Juif appelé Bar-Jésus. Celui-ci pratique la magie et veut faire croire qu’il est prophète. Il vit dans le palais du gouverneur Sergius Paulus. Ce gouverneur est un homme intelligent. Il fait venir Barnabas et Saul, parce qu’il veut entendre la parole de Dieu. Mais Élymas (c’est le nom grec du magicien) est contre Barnabas et Saul, il ne veut pas que le gouverneur devienne croyant. Saul, appelé aussi Paul, est rempli de l’Esprit Saint. Alors il regarde Élymas et lui dit : « Espèce de menteur, tu trompes tout le monde ! Fils de Satan, tu es contre tout ce qui est bon ! La volonté du Seigneur est droite et toi, tu la rends toute tordue ! Est-ce que tu vas arrêter ? Maintenant, écoute, tu vas devenir aveugle. Pendant un certain temps, tu ne verras plus la lumière du soleil. » Aussitôt, tout devient sombre pour Élymas, il est dans la nuit, il tourne en rond, il cherche quelqu’un pour le conduire par la main. Le gouverneur voit ce qui est arrivé et devient croyant. En effet, l’enseignement au sujet du Seigneur l’a touché profondément. Paul et ceux qui l’accompagnent prennent le bateau à Paphos et ils vont à Pergé en Pamphylie. Alors Jean-Marc les quitte et retourne à Jérusalem. Ensuite, Paul et Barnabas quittent Pergé et ils arrivent à Antioche de Pisidie. Le jour du sabbat, ils entrent dans la maison de prière des Juifs et ils s’assoient. On fait la lecture dans les livres de la loi et des prophètes. Puis les chefs de la maison de prière disent à Paul et Barnabas : « Frères, est-ce que vous voulez dire quelques mots aux gens pour les encourager ? Vous pouvez parler ! » Paul se lève, il fait signe de la main et dit : « Israélites et vous qui adorez Dieu, écoutez-moi ! Le Dieu de notre peuple Israël a choisi nos ancêtres. Il a fait grandir ce peuple pendant qu’il vivait à l’étranger en Égypte. Ensuite, Dieu l’a fait sortir d’Égypte par sa puissance. Pendant à peu près 40 ans, il a pris soin de son peuple dans le désert. Il a détruit sept nations dans le pays de Canaan et il a donné leurs terres comme propriété à notre peuple. Tout cela a duré à peu près 450 ans. Puis Dieu a donné des chefs à nos ancêtres, jusqu’à l’époque du prophète Samuel. Ensuite nos ancêtres ont demandé un roi, et Dieu leur a donné Saül, le fils de Quich, de la tribu de Benjamin. Saül a été roi pendant 40 ans. « Après cela, Dieu l’a rejeté et il a donné David comme roi à nos ancêtres. Dieu parle de David en disant : “J’ai trouvé David, le fils de Jessé. C’est un homme qui me plaît, il fera tout ce que je veux.” Dans la famille de David, Dieu a fait naître, comme il l’avait promis, un Sauveur pour le peuple d’Israël : c’est Jésus.

Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their helper. They traveled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer and false prophet named Bar-Jesus, who was an attendant of the proconsul, Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. But Elymas the sorcerer (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul from the faith. Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said, “You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord? Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.” Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand. When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord. From Paphos, Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia, where John left them to return to Jerusalem. From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch. On the Sabbath they entered the synagogue and sat down. After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, please speak.” Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand and said: “Fellow Israelites and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me! The God of the people of Israel chose our ancestors; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt; with mighty power he led them out of that country; for about forty years he endured their conduct in the wilderness; and he overthrew seven nations in Canaan, giving their land to his people as their inheritance. All this took about 450 years. “After this, God gave them judges until the time of Samuel the prophet. Alors Saul, qui s’appelait aussi Paul, rempli du Saint-Esprit, s’adressa à lui en le regardant droit dans les yeux : Charlatan plein de ruse et de méchanceté, fils du diable, ennemi de tout ce qui est bien, quand cesseras-tu de fausser les plans du Seigneur qui sont droits ? Mais maintenant, attention ! La main du Seigneur va te frapper, tu vas devenir aveugle et, pendant un certain temps, tu ne verras plus la lumière du soleil. Au même instant, les yeux d’Elymas s’obscurcirent ; il se trouva plongé dans une nuit noire et se tournait de tous côtés en cherchant quelqu’un pour le guider par la main. Quand le proconsul vit ce qui venait de se passer, il crut ; car il avait été vivement impressionné par l’enseignement qui lui avait été donné au sujet du Seigneur. Paul et ses compagnons reprirent la mer à Paphos et arrivèrent à Pergé en Pamphylie. Là, Jean-Marc les abandonna et retourna à Jérusalem.
