Wa David te byen chita nan palè li. Senyè a te pwoteje l, li te fè tout lènmi ki te alantou peyi a pa chache l kont ankò. Wa a pale ak pwofèt Natan, li di l konsa: — Gade! Mwen rete nan yon kay bati ak bwa sèd, men Bwat Kontra Senyè a se anba yon kay twal li ye. Natan reponn li: — Tou sa ou gen lide fè, ou mèt fè l, paske Senyè a kanpe la avè ou. Men, menm jou lannwit sa a, Senyè a pale ak Natan, li di l konsa: — Ale di David, sèvitè m lan, men sa mwen menm Senyè a, mwen voye di l: Se pa ou menm ki pral bati yon tanp pou m rete. Depi jou mwen te fè moun pèp Izrayèl yo sòti kite peyi Lejip rive jòdi a, mwen pa janm rete nan yon kay. Tout kote m pase se anba yon tant twal mwen toujou ye. Nan tout deplase mwen ansanm ak moun Izrayèl yo, mwen pa janm mande yonn nan chèf mwen te chwazi pou gouvènen pèp mwen an poukisa yo pa bati yon kay an bwa sèd pou mwen. Kounyeya, men sa w'a di David, sèvitè m lan: Men sa Senyè ki gen tout pouvwa a voye di ou: Se mwen menm ki te pran ou dèyè mouton ou t'ap gade nan savann yo, mwen mete ou chèf pèp mwen an. Nan tou sa ou t'ap fè, mwen te kanpe la avè ou. Mwen kraze tout lènmi ou yo devan ou. Mwen pral fè yo nonmen non ou tankou y'ap nonmen non pi gwo chèf ki sou latè. Lèfini, mwen pare yon kote pou pèp Izrayèl mwen an. Mwen pral tabli yo la pou yo ka viv san yo pa bezwen pè anyen ankò. Mechan yo p'ap vin maltrete yo ankò jan yo te konn fè l anvan an, lè mwen te mete jij yo pou gouvènen pèp Izrayèl mwen an. M'ap delivre ou anba men tout lènmi ou yo. Mwen te fè ou konnen m'ap ba ou pitit ak pitit pitit. Lè lè a va rive pou ou mouri, lè y'a antere ou, m'ap pran yonn nan pitit ou yo, m'ap mete l wa nan plas ou. M'ap fè gouvènman l lan kanpe fèm. Se li menm ki va bati yon tanp pou mwen. M'ap fè gouvènman l lan kanpe fèm pou tout tan. M'ap yon papa pou li. Li menm l'ap yon pitit pou mwen. Si li fè sa ki mal, m'ap korije l tankou yon papa korije pitit gason li. Men, m'ap toujou soutni l, mwen p'ap lage l jan mwen te lage Sayil lè mwen te kite l tonbe pou m te mete ou nan plas li. Ap toujou gen moun nan fanmi ou chita sou fòtèy la ap gouvènen apre ou, paske m'ap fè gouvènman fanmi ou lan kanpe fèm pou tout tan.

Le roi David s’installe dans son palais. Le SEIGNEUR le délivre de tous les ennemis qui entourent le pays, et il vit en paix. Un jour, le roi dit au prophète Natan : « Tu vois, moi, j’habite une maison en bois de cèdre. Mais le coffre sacré a seulement une tente de toile comme maison. » Natan dit au roi : « Tu as sûrement une idée à ce sujet. Fais ce que tu penses, le SEIGNEUR est avec toi. » Mais la nuit suivante, le SEIGNEUR adresse ces paroles à Natan : « Tu iras trouver mon serviteur David et tu lui diras de ma part : “Je l’affirme, moi le SEIGNEUR, ce n’est pas toi qui vas me construire une maison pour que je l’habite. En effet, depuis le jour où j’ai fait sortir d’Égypte le peuple d’Israël, et jusqu’à aujourd’hui, je n’ai jamais habité dans une maison. Mais j’étais comme un voyageur, j’allais d’un lieu à un autre et j’habitais dans une tente . De plus, pendant toutes ces années où j’ai accompagné les Israélites, j’ai nommé plusieurs chefs. Ce sont eux qui ont gouverné Israël mon peuple. Je n’ai jamais dit à personne : Pourquoi est-ce que vous ne m’avez pas construit une maison en bois de cèdre ?” C’est pourquoi tu diras encore de ma part à mon serviteur David : “Moi, le SEIGNEUR de l’univers, je t’ai pris au pâturage, derrière tes moutons. J’ai voulu que tu deviennes le chef d’Israël, mon peuple. J’ai été avec toi partout où tu es allé. J’ai fait mourir devant toi tous tes ennemis. Je te rendrai aussi célèbre que les plus grands rois de la terre. Je vais donner un lieu à Israël, mon peuple. Je l’installerai là, il y restera sans avoir peur. Des gens mauvais ne viendront plus l’écraser comme autrefois, quand j’ai nommé des juges pour gouverner Israël, mon peuple. Je te délivrerai de tous tes ennemis, et tu vivras dans la paix. Enfin, je t’annonce ceci : c’est moi, le SEIGNEUR, qui te construirai une maison . En effet, quand ta vie sera finie et que tu auras rejoint tes ancêtres, je désignerai un de tes fils. Il sera roi après toi, et j’établirai solidement son pouvoir. C’est lui qui me construira une maison, et grâce à moi, son pouvoir royal sera établi pour toujours. Je serai un père pour lui, et il sera un fils pour moi. S’il fait le mal, je le corrigerai à la manière des hommes, comme un père frappe son fils. Mais je ne lui retirerai jamais ma faveur comme je l’ai fait avec Saül . Lui, je l’ai rejeté pour te mettre à sa place. Quelqu’un de ta famille sera toujours roi après toi. En effet, le pouvoir royal de ta famille sera établi pour toujours.” »

After the king was settled in his palace and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.” Nathan replied to the king, “Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the LORD is with you.” But that night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying: “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD says: Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in? I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling. Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?” ’ “Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth. And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies. “ ‘The LORD declares to you that the LORD himself will establish a house for you: When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands. But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’ ”

Comme le roi s’était installé dans son palais, et que l’Eternel lui avait accordé une existence paisible en le délivrant de tous ses ennemis à l’entour, il dit au prophète Nathan : Regarde ! J’habite dans un palais de cèdre, alors que le coffre de Dieu est installé au milieu d’une tente de toile. Nathan lui répondit : Va et réalise les projets qui te tiennent à cœur, car l’Eternel est avec toi. Cependant, la nuit suivante l’Eternel adressa la parole à Nathan en ces termes : Va dire à mon serviteur David : « Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel : Tu veux me bâtir un temple où je puisse habiter ? Je n’ai jamais résidé dans un temple depuis le jour où j’ai fait sortir les Israélites d’Egypte jusqu’à aujourd’hui. J’ai cheminé sous une tente, logeant dans le tabernacle. Pendant tout ce temps où j’ai accompagné les Israélites, ai-je jamais dit à un seul des chefs d’Israël que j’avais établis pour diriger mon peuple : Pourquoi ne me bâtissez-vous pas un temple en bois de cèdre ? » Voici maintenant ce que tu diras à mon serviteur David : « Ainsi parle l’Eternel, le Seigneur des armées célestes : je suis allé te chercher dans les pâturages où tu gardais les moutons, pour faire de toi le chef de mon peuple Israël. Je t’ai soutenu dans toutes tes entreprises et je t’ai débarrassé de tous tes ennemis. Je te ferai un nom très glorieux comme celui des grands de la terre. J’ai attribué un territoire à mon peuple Israël où je l’ai implanté pour qu’il habite chez lui et ne soit plus inquiété et opprimé comme auparavant par des hommes méchants, comme à l’époque où j’avais établi des chefs pour mon peuple Israël. Je t’ai accordé une existence paisible en te délivrant de tous tes ennemis. Et l’Eternel t’annonce qu’il te constituera une dynastie. Quand le moment sera venu pour toi de rejoindre tes ancêtres décédés, j’établirai après toi l’un de tes propres descendants pour te succéder comme roi, et j’affermirai son autorité royale. C’est lui qui construira un temple en mon honneur et je maintiendrai à toujours son trône royal. Je serai pour lui un Père, et il sera pour moi un Fils ; s’il fait le mal, je me servirai d’hommes pour le corriger par des coups et des châtiments, mais je ne lui retirerai jamais ma faveur, comme je l’ai retirée à Saül, que j’ai écarté pour te faire place. Oui, je rendrai stable pour toujours ta dynastie et ta royauté, et ton trône sera inébranlable à perpétuité. »
