Lè sa a, Senyè a bay yonn nan pwofèt li yo ki te nan peyi Jida lòd pou li moute lavil Betèl. Lè li rive lavil Betèl, Jewoboram te kanpe bò lotèl la ap boule lansan. Dapre lòd Senyè a te ba li a, pwofèt la pale byen fò, li bay mesay sa a sou lotèl la: — Ou menm lotèl! Wi, ou menm lotèl! Men sa Senyè a di: Nan fanmi David la, gen yon timoun ki pral fèt, y'ap rele l Jozyas. L'ap vini, l'ap pran tout prèt k'ap sèvi nan kay zidòl yo, prèt k'ap boule lansan sou ou yo, l'ap touye yo sou ou. Lèfini, sou ou ankò y'a boule zosman moun. Menm jou sa a pwofèt la bay yon siy, li di konsa: — Lotèl sa a pral fann de bò. Sann dife ki sou li a pral gaye tout atè a. Lè n'a wè sa, n'a konnen se Senyè a menm ki pale nan bouch mwen. Lè Jewoboram tande pawòl pwofèt la te di sou lotèl Betèl la, li lonje dwèt sou pwofèt la sou lotèl la epi li di: — Pran msye! Men, men li te lonje sou pwofèt la rete tou rèd. Li pa te ka fè mouvman avè li ankò. Lamenm, lotèl la rete konsa, li fann de bò, epi sann dife ki te sou li a gaye tout atè a, jan pwofèt la te di sa nan non Senyè a. Wa Jewoboram pran lapawòl ankò, li di pwofèt Bondye a konsa: — Tanpri, lapriyè Senyè a, Bondye ou la, pou mwen. Mande l pou l geri men m. Pwofèt la lapriyè Senyè a vre, epi men wa a geri, li vin jan li te ye anvan an. Apre sa, wa a di pwofèt la konsa: — Ann al lakay avè m. W'a manje. Lèfini, m'a fè ou kado kichòy. Pwofèt la reponn: — Ou ta mèt ban mwen mwatye nan tout richès ou yo, mwen p'ap mete pwent pye m lakay ou. Mwen p'ap manje pen, ni mwen p'ap bwè dlo isit la. Paske, Senyè a te ban mwen lòd pou m pa ni manje ni bwè anyen, lèfini pou m pa pran menm chemen mwen te vini an pou m tounen lakay mwen. Se konsa li pran yon lòt wout pou l tounen lakay li, li pa pran menm chemen li te pran lè li t'ap vini lavil Betèl la.

Or, un homme de Dieu arrive de Juda à Béthel sur l’ordre du SEIGNEUR. Jéroboam est en train de faire brûler de l’encens sur l’autel. Alors le prophète se met à crier cette parole du SEIGNEUR contre l’autel : « Autel ! Autel ! Écoute ce que dit le SEIGNEUR ! Un garçon va naître dans la famille de David. Il s’appellera Josias. Sur toi, il offrira en sacrifice les prêtres des lieux sacrés, là ou ils faisaient brûler de l’encens. Sur toi aussi, on brûlera des os humains ! » Ce jour-là, l’homme de Dieu prévient Jéroboam de ce qui va arriver en disant : « L’autel va se casser, et les cendres grasses qui sont dessus vont tomber par terre. Ce sera la preuve que c’est bien une parole du SEIGNEUR. » Jéroboam entend la parole que l’homme de Dieu a criée contre l’autel de Béthel. Alors il lève le bras au-dessus de l’autel et il crie : « Arrêtez cet homme ! » Mais le bras qu’il avait levé contre lui reste en l’air, paralysé, et il ne peut plus le ramener à lui. L’autel se casse, et les cendres qui sont dessus tombent par terre, comme le prophète l’a annoncé, sur l’ordre du SEIGNEUR. Alors le roi dit à l’homme de Dieu : « Je t’en prie, demande au SEIGNEUR ton Dieu de calmer sa colère. Prie pour moi, pour que mon bras guérisse. » Le prophète prie le SEIGNEUR, et le roi peut ramener à lui son bras qui redevient comme avant. Le roi dit à l’homme de Dieu : « Entre avec moi dans la maison pour reprendre des forces. Je vais t’offrir un cadeau. » Mais l’homme de Dieu répond au roi : « Même si tu me donnais la moitié de tes biens, je n’entrerais pas chez toi. Je ne mangerai pas de pain, je ne boirai pas d’eau ici. En effet, le SEIGNEUR m’a donné cet ordre : “Tu ne mangeras pas de pain, tu ne boiras pas d’eau. Et pour rentrer chez toi, tu ne prendras pas le même chemin qu’en venant.” » L’homme de Dieu s’en va donc par un autre chemin : il ne prend pas celui qui l’a amené à Béthel.

By the word of the LORD a man of God came from Judah to Bethel, as Jeroboam was standing by the altar to make an offering. By the word of the LORD he cried out against the altar: “Altar, altar! This is what the LORD says: ‘A son named Josiah will be born to the house of David. On you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who make offerings here, and human bones will be burned on you.’ ” That same day the man of God gave a sign: “This is the sign the LORD has declared: The altar will be split apart and the ashes on it will be poured out.” When King Jeroboam heard what the man of God cried out against the altar at Bethel, he stretched out his hand from the altar and said, “Seize him!” But the hand he stretched out toward the man shriveled up, so that he could not pull it back. Also, the altar was split apart and its ashes poured out according to the sign given by the man of God by the word of the LORD. Then the king said to the man of God, “Intercede with the LORD your God and pray for me that my hand may be restored.” So the man of God interceded with the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored and became as it was before. The king said to the man of God, “Come home with me for a meal, and I will give you a gift.” But the man of God answered the king, “Even if you were to give me half your possessions, I would not go with you, nor would I eat bread or drink water here. For I was commanded by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came.’ ” So he took another road and did not return by the way he had come to Bethel.

Un homme de Dieu se rendit de Juda à Béthel sur ordre de l’Eternel. Il arriva pendant que Jéroboam se tenait devant l’autel et s’apprêtait à faire brûler les parfums. L’homme de Dieu se mit à lancer des invectives contre l’autel, selon l’ordre de l’Eternel. Il cria : Autel ! Autel ! Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel : il naîtra un fils parmi les descendants de David ; son nom sera Josias. Sur cet autel, il égorgera les prêtres des hauts lieux qui offrent sur toi des parfums, et l’on fera brûler sur toi des ossements humains ! En même temps, le prophète leur donna un signe : Voici le signe qui vous prouvera que l’Eternel a parlé : l’autel va se fendre et la graisse qui le recouvre sera répandue sur le sol. Lorsque le roi Jéroboam entendit la menace que l’homme de Dieu proférait contre l’autel de Béthel, il étendit la main par-dessus l’autel et cria à ses gardes : « Arrêtez-le ! » Mais la main que Jéroboam avait étendue contre le prophète devint paralysée, de sorte qu’il ne put plus la ramener à lui. Au même moment, l’autel se fendit et la graisse qui était dessus se répandit par terre. C’était exactement le signe que l’homme de Dieu avait annoncé sur ordre de l’Eternel. Alors le roi dit à l’homme de Dieu : Je t’en prie, implore l’Eternel, ton Dieu, et prie pour moi, afin que je puisse ramener ma main à moi. Le prophète implora l’Eternel, et le roi put ramener sa main à lui comme auparavant. Alors le roi invita l’homme de Dieu : Viens avec moi dans mon palais te restaurer. Ensuite, je te ferai un cadeau. Mais celui-ci répondit : Même si tu me donnais la moitié de ton palais, je n’entrerais pas chez toi. Je ne mangerai rien et je ne boirai pas une goutte d’eau en ce lieu, car l’Eternel m’a donné l’ordre suivant : Tu ne prendras pas de nourriture, tu ne boiras pas d’eau en ce lieu et tu n’emprunteras pas à ton retour le même chemin qu’à l’aller. Il repartit donc par un autre chemin que celui par lequel il était venu à Béthel.
