Light Has Come

DAY 9 OF 12

The Prince of Peace

Christmas should be peaceful, right? Yet between the hectic schedules, crowded stores, complicated family dynamics, and financial pressure, peace often feels like the one thing we don’t have. In addition, our world is filled with division and strife. Everyone is looking for peace but finding very little of it.

Yet peace is woven throughout the Christmas story. The prophet Isaiah proclaimed Jesus would be called the “Prince of Peace.” When angels announced Jesus’ birth to the shepherds, they declared in Luke 2:14, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

Peace isn’t just what Jesus gives, it’s who He is.

The Hebrew word for Prince is sar, which means “commander, ruler, leader, or captain.” He’s the one who overcomes all obstacles to accomplish his purpose. So when we say Jesus is the Prince of Peace, we’re saying He’s the Commander who fights for our peace. He’s powerful enough to bring peace no matter what we’re facing.

Here’s the difference between worldly peace and Jesus’ peace: worldly peace depends on circumstances. “If I just had enough money, if my relationships were better, if my health improved, then I’d have peace.” Yet that kind of peace is temporary and fragile. One phone call, one diagnosis, one conflict can shatter it.

Jesus offers something different. In John 14:27, He said, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” His peace isn’t based on circumstances, it’s supernatural. The peace of Christ is a gift we receive when we walk with Him.

Remember Jesus in the boat during the storm in Mark 4:35–41? The disciples were panicking, convinced they’re going to drown. And Jesus? He was sleeping! He was at complete peace because He knows who His Father is and what His Father can do. When the disciples woke Him, He calmed the storm with a word.

The same Spirit Jesus had lives in you if you’re a believer. Galatians 5:22 says peace is a fruit of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit inside you produces peace. Yet you have a part to play. Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.”

Peace comes when we fix our minds on God.

Where is your mind fixed today? On the news? On your problems? On your fears? Or on God? You get to choose what you focus on, and that choice determines your peace. When you set your mind on God’s faithfulness, His promises, His presence, peace follows.

Pray

Prince of Peace, I need Your peace today. My mind is fixed on my circumstances instead of on You. Help me trust You more. Remind me that You’re in control and You’re fighting for me. Fill me with Your supernatural peace. Amen.
