Preparing the way
Before he was born, John had a very clear call on his life. It was prophesied in Isaiah 40:3 that he was to prepare the way for Jesus, his cousin. And even in the womb, John knew who he was and what he was on earth to do. He ‘leapt for joy’ in Elizabeth’s womb as Jesus’ mother Mary greeted her (Luke 1:39–45). There was always a calling on his life.
Mary and Elizabeth had both received a word from God that their sons would change the world as they knew it. One would be king over all – reigning from a throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16). The other would lead those from the Judean countryside and Jerusalem to this king, to understand the good news about Him and to be baptised in His name. As John baptised with water, we see the fulfilment of Mark 1:8 in Acts 1:5 when Jesus baptised with the Holy Spirit. I love how all of scripture prophesies and fulfils itself and how it all leads to our beautiful Saviour.
You and I aren’t all that different from John. Psalm 139 tells us that all our days were written in His book before one of them came to be. There’s a calling on our lives to be ‘sent people’ and to prepare the way for Jesus’ return.
In the lead-up to Christmas, let’s lean in and use the constant reminders of the urgency of the Gospel to be a light in this world, just like John was.

About this Plan

“This Christmas season let’s remember that God’s promises are not like ours – fragile and sometimes forgotten – but are firm, fulfilled and forever. In every wrapped gift, flickering Christmas tree light and sung carol, may we see a reflection of the ultimate gift: Jesus, the righteous branch – our everlasting hope.” (The Promise of a Righteous Branch – Robbie Parkin)
