The promise of a righteous branch
Christmas time is a time of promises – promises whispered to our children about gifts, time together and the wonder of Christmas morning. These small promises, though tender and genuine, reflect a much greater one: the promise of what Christmas is really all about – the arrival of the Saviour of the world.
Over six hundred years before that first Christmas, Jeremiah spoke of the hope of a righteous Branch... from David’s line who would bring righteousness and restoration. This was not a fleeting promise, but one established in God’s power, love and eternal faithfulness.
Jesus is the complete and all-embracing fulfilment of that promise. Not just a baby, born in a manger, wrapped in humility – He is the Lord our righteous Saviour. In a world still aching for peace and justice, the arrival of this baby brings true and lasting hope, not just for ancient Israel, but for us today in the twenty first century.
This Christmas season let’s remember that God’s promises are not like ours – fragile and sometimes forgotten – but are firm, fulfilled and forever. In every wrapped gift, flickering Christmas tree light and sung carol, may we see a reflection of the ultimate gift: Jesus, the righteous branch – our everlasting hope.
