Even in the Shadows: Living With Depression

DAY 5 OF 7

In the Garden with Jesus

When I think about depression and prayer, I often return to the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus, knowing what was ahead, said to His disciples, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death.” (Matthew 26:38 NLT) Then He fell to the ground and prayed, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me.”(v. 39)

This wasn’t a polished prayer. It was raw, anguished, and deeply human... and it reminds me that honest prayer is not only allowed -- it’s sacred.

During depressive episodes, my prayer life often suffers. Words don’t come easily. Motivation fades. Sometimes all I can offer is silence, or a sigh, or a simple “Help.” But I’ve come to believe that God understands my dysregulated inner system far better than I do. He doesn’t need eloquence... He desires presence. And even when I feel distant, He is near.

Jesus was known as “a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief” (Isaiah 53:3 NLT). He wept when He heard that His friend Lazarus had died (John 11:35). He didn’t suppress emotion -- He expressed it. And that gives me comfort. Having deeply felt emotion doesn’t make us weak. If anything, it draws us closer to the heart of Christ.

Hebrews 2:17 (NIV) tells us that Jesus was “made to be fully human in every way,” so that He could be a merciful and faithful High Priest. He was like us in every way, yet without sin. That means He understands not just our temptations, but our tears. He knows what it is to feel crushed, overwhelmed, and sorrowful. And He doesn’t rebuke us for feeling the same. He simply says, “Come to Me.” (Matthew 11:28 NLT)

If you’re struggling to pray today, remember: Jesus has been there. He knows what it is to feel crushed. And He invites you to come... not with perfect words, but with your whole heart.

Reflection Questions

  • When life feels heavy, what helps you feel safe enough to be honest with yourself, or with God?
  • How does it change your view of Jesus to know He experienced deep sorrow and didn’t hide it?

Prayer

God, I feel crushed. The weight is real, and I don’t know how to carry it. I don’t have fancy words -- just pain, silence, and a heart that’s tired. Thank You for not asking me to pretend. Thank You for showing me that Jesus felt this too. Stay close. That’s all I ask. Amen.
